Since this will be the final post in the history of Off The Bench, I feel that this post can’t just be a simple post about an NFL player buying segways for his teammates or an improbable buzzer beater from a high school basketball game.
I’d like to echo the sentiments that Rick featured in his goodbye and would like to thank him, Rob Sylvester, Josiah Schlatter, and the rest of the folks at NBC Sports for welcoming me to this fine website.
It has been my pleasure being the weekend editor for this site since June of 2011 and I’ve enjoyed every minute of this job. There are few times in life when you can be truly happy and working for this site is something that I will cherish for years to come.
For those of you trying to track me down after the site goes dark, you can find my work at the NBA website, “That NBA Lottery Pick” along with the general sports blog, “Outside the Boxscore“. You might also see me posting top ten lists on Guyspeed and other sports writing endeavours in the near future, so keep up to date by following me on Twitter under the handle, @therealbenchew.
Every time I think about goodbyes, the reference that I use the most is from the final episode of the NBC hit comedy, “Frasier”. As Frasier says goodbye to his radio audience for the final time after taking a television job in San Francisco, he says “For eleven years, you’ve heard me say “I’m listening” but you were listening too and for that I am eternally grateful”.
That echoes my thoughts ten fold and I wish that this sports blog brought you joy/sadness/happiness or whatever you needed to feel during a tough work week/a relaxing Saturday afternoon/or as a procrastination tool.
I thank you for letting me into your life.
At the end of Monday Night Football, Don Meredith used to say, “Turn off the lights, the party’s over”. I just want you to know that I’ll turn the lights off for you and until me meet again on the world wide web, enjoy every second that you’re alive in this crazy world we live in and let fortune/fate be your guide…
