It will be hard to look at 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh the same way after this. Let’s go way back to 1996 and watch his guest starring role as Screech’s cousin, of all things, in an episode of Saved By the Bell: The New Class. Harbaugh was the quarterback for the Indianapolis Colts at the time.
It started in 1988 as a series entitled Good Morning Miss Bliss, then morphed into the legendary Saved By the Bell, and Saved By the Bell: The College Years. But perhaps only true SBTB aficionados will know that there was a fourth version of the series, Saved By the Bell: The New Class, which aired on Saturday mornings from 1993 to 2000. In season 4, episode 6, Harbaugh appears “as himself” to dispense a little wisdom about life, football, and the power of honesty … although Screech does deflate the message a bit by posing as his cousin in a Colts uniform.
Sorry, no Zack Morris, Elizabeth Berkley or Mario Lopez as A.C. Slater … but Mr. Belding is there. (Mr. Belding will be with us, always). And of course gratuitous Dustin Diamond, who in this series is Mr. Belding’s “assistant.”
Harbaugh Words of Wisdom: “When you start to think that you’re a big shot, that’s when you usually get into trouble.”
They could have called this episode The Leon Lett Story.
Scroll ahead to the 15:20 mark for Harbaugh’s entrance … and then to 18:55 for his inspirational speech to Bayside High students.
Fun fact: The Disney Channel series Good Morning Miss Bliss was set in Indianapolis. But by the time Harbaugh made his appearance on the show in 1996 as quarterback of the Colts, it had transformed into Saved By the Bell: The New Class, which was set in Palisades, Calif. The Raiders had left LA for Oakland in 1994 … which is how horrifyingly close we came to getting Jeff Hostetler in this episode.
