The AD does owe an explanation better than “moving in a new direction.” The AD opened up this can of worms himself.

If your contract expires, the employer has the option to give you a new contract or not.

Now with that being said, being fired because your gay and not having your contract renewed because your gay would be the same type of discrimination.
