Iowa students dress up as Jerry Sandusky before Iowa/Penn State football game

Getty Images As we near the start of All Hallow’s Eve, you just knew that some group of college students were going to dress up as former Penn State defensive coordinator/convicted child abuser Jerry Sandusky.
However, I didn’t expect that the students who would dress up as Sandusky would attend a Big Ten game featuring the disgraced coaches former team.
Before yesterday’s Iowa/Penn State Big Ten tilt in Iowa City, the below photo of four Iowa college students dressed up in black and white prison jumpsuits with the words, “J. Sandusky” written on the back of them:
As you might figure, some of the Penn State fans who traveled to attend the game weren’t exactly laughing:
Chris Sherman, a 2008 Penn State grad who drove five hours for Saturday night’s game, was offended by what the Iowa students did. But he said it’s an isolated incident.
“That was a little distasteful,” Sherman said. “And you know, I’ve heard a comment here and there, but for the most part it’s been OK.”

I am not a Penn State fan, but this is not a funny situation and frankly, a shameful expression from a few Iowa folks. guessing the victims, friends and family of the victims do not see anything at all humorous about molesting children. Also guessing lots of Iowa folks embarrassed as well by these knuckleheads!

So, let me understand: the same PSU staff, fans, and boosters who made Sandusky a very wealthy man and fostered an environment where they looked the other way while he committed those monstrous crimes are insulted?
Are you kidding me? This looks like it supports the victims because it reminds us all to NEVER forget!
Those who ignore history are doomed to repeat it. I say give these kids extra credit points.

LOL – because all of Nittany Nation knew this was going on and not a single one of us said anything. Get your head out of your butt.

A pretty crass and tasteless joke. I wonder if someone sexually assaulted one of these knuckleheads mother or sister. Then someone dressed up like the rapist for halloween. Do these knuckleheads really think that would be clever or funny? I know they’re college kids but you would hope one of the four would have the common sense to say “hey, this is probably not a good idea”

The boys are high school students, not U of I students. They’re all good kids, on the honor roll, etc. It’s close to Halloween and they thought they were being funny. (How many adults will dress the same for Halloween or even profit from selling Sandusky costumes?!) Their parents did NOT know they were going to dress this way before going to the game. How many of us have made questionable decisions when we were in high school? In poor taste, yes. But if it’s the worst mistake they ever make it’s not so bad.

Not surprised. Sure, it’s tasteless, etc., but youth is best spent pushing limits. They’ll grow up.

@carl1spackler:
Are you kidding me? There were four people involved with the univiersity who coverd up sandusky’s acts, not PSU staff, fans, and boosters. Four people. Those four people deserve to be punished and sandusky deserves a lot worse than he got but don’t you dare act like the everyone involved with penn state is responsible for what he did. it wasn’t the staff the fans and the boosters it was a few idiots who thought they were protecting their own jobs and reputations. There are 100,000 other people associated with penn state and i am tired of people like you trying to act like because one POS that once upon a time had a job at penn state was a pedophile that all the rest of us are guilty of something. There are pedophiles in every town in this country including yours. By your rationale you are responsible for any or them in your town or at your university or place of employment too. No one here is ignoring history and believe me, we won’t ever forget. You and people like you are the ones who will forget because you will find something or someone else to spew your high and mighty you are all to blame bs onto to make you feel a little better about yourselves. I didn’t do anything to help anyone harm children and neither did 999,995 other people associated with Penn State.

It is your fault too for treating football like a religion up there

Again, are you kidding me? You are right, Penn state is the only school in the country that treats football like religion, lol.

Well, if you’re counting schools, it appears PSU is the only school in the country where the fans, staff, boosters, and everyone associated with the school elevated it’s coaches to a level where no one, not even his own bosses, dared challenge his power and call police or child protection. Instead they coddled a child rapist and made him a wealthy man. People there obviously do not understand how every time they bought a PSU season ticket, made a donation, or purchased apparel that they were fostering a kingdom that looked the other way.
You helped Sandusky.
And to feign indignation at a couple kids out in Iowa is only further proof that nobody wants to take responsibility. Instead you choose to transfer your embarrassment to some teenagers in Halloween costumes.

“This was not a mistake by these men, this was not an oversight, it was not misjudgment on their part,” she said. “This was a conspiracy of silence by top officials to actively conceal the truth.”
Pennsylvanians can keep pretending they did not contribute to the colossal crimes committed by Sandusky. PSU fans are in DENIAL when they look down their noses at the rest of the country when we hold you accountable.
Face it– Sandusky is your legacy.
And Joe Pa would be going to jail for criminal obstruction of justice, too, had he survived.
To feign offense at a couple Iowa City kids dressing in Halloween costumes does a huge disservice to those innocent victims. I think it’d be appropriate if everyone wears 1910′s-era prison costumes to all remaining PSU games.

Didn’t Bill Maher joke that Iowa is “Just fat f*cks and farms?” Same poor taste as these numbnuts, but funny nonetheless. Only in America.

If it was almost any other crime than child abuse, this would have to be considered pretty funny. Unfortunately, it is a crime involving kids, and as such, really shouldn’t have been carried out by these kids. Do have to keep in mind, if one other post is accurate, that they’re high school kids. They will learn when to poke fun at someone/something and when not to. I’m sure if asked, they don’t think what happened at Penn State was in any way “funny”.

I am an Iowa resident as well as a Penn State alumni. I attended the game in Iowa City Saturday night along with my wife and two children (15 and 6 yrs old). I will start by saying that the majority of fans were very gracious and accommodating as most Iowans are. However, the jeers started before we even made it into Kinnick Stadium. A random Iowa fan walking past us shouted out “Sandusky” as if he had Tourette’s Syndrome. Once we took our seats, the game started out very exciting… but it didn’t last long. As soon as Penn State took control of the game the Iowa fans turned on their own team with insults and boo’s. As the game deteriorated for Iowa the fans turned their anger toward the Penn State fans and team. It was a similar theme, “Sandusky” and “No bowl game”. I have been to numerous away games in hostile environments before so I expect a certain level of abuse. I never felt like my safety was at risk, but at the same time I was disappointed in the behavior of the Iowans that I have grown to respect so much over the seven years I have lived here. If you’re going to taunt the opposing team and fans at least be a little more creative. Hawkeye’s, you’re better than this.

I remember back in high school a kid on the opposing team set up cement blocks and derailed a train. They caught him, threw him in jail, and somehow he got out “just in time” for our regional basketball game against his team. Many of our students wore engineer’s caps to the game and started singing the song “I’ve Been Working on The Railroad” during pre-game player introductions. I think he torched us for FORTY+ points. Needless to say, we lost

Kids made a bad call on the costumes no doubt. But lets not kill them over it. Fans from every state, city, and town get carried away in one form or another. This one is extra tough because the crime they made a joke was to children. Personally I felt and still feel that PSU should have been stripped of football forever. You keep something like that under lock and key and allow it to continue then your just as guilty. An example needed to be made, one that would never need to be made again.
