Japanese athlete Maya Nakanishi isn’t short in the courage department. She lost her right leg in a workplace accident when she was 21 (she was hit by a steel beam), but has come back to become one of the world’s top Paralympic sprinters. Nakanishi, the Asian record holder in the T44 (one leg amputated below the knee) 200 meter and long jump, competed at the 2008 Paralympics in Beijing, and wants to compete in London this year, but funding her training has been tough.

So she’s produced a nude calendar in the vein of ESPN the Magazine’s The Body issue, which she hopes will fund the trip and help pay for a new artificial limb.

“I don’t regret having become nude. I’m very happy that I was able to show Maya Nakanishi as I am.”

In a statement, Nakanishi said she was unable to compete in the 2011 world championships due to a lack of financial resources, despite being a Japanese medal chance, and the calendar is an attempt to tackle that problem.

Here’s her Facebook page.

Tried to remember her name the other day but I was stumped.

Arguably one of, if not the, most classless comments ever posted on Off The Bench. Hope you’re proud of yourself. I’m guessing it’s the only thing you’ve ever “won”.

Good luck to her in her attempt to raise money. It costs and arm and a leg to get there.

The second most ignorant comment ever posted on Off The Bench. You have work to do, but you are catching up to the idiot that made the stumped comment. So congratulations there…

You people have no idea. As a Paralympian, we often have to raise our own monies to go to even a event in another state, let alone Europe, Australia or Asia. Just wait until you Flush listeners and False News watchers become old or disabled. Then you’ll know how society views you.
