Bob Arum ups the ante, goes full Hitler: ‘Mayweather is from the school of propaganda that Joseph Goebbels adopted’

May 9, 2012, 12:20 PM EDT

Boxer Pacquiao of the Philippines waves to the crowd as he is introduced during a news conference to announce his upcoming WBO welterweight championship fight, in Los Angeles Reuters

Alternate headline: Inglorious Basterds.

It was only a matter of time before one side or the other broke out a Hitler reference in this Manny Pacquiao, Floyd Mayweather war of words. If you bet that it would be Pacquiao promoter Bob Arum, please collect your winnings. And you get extra if you bet the Daily Double — that Arum would invoke both Hitler and Joseph Goebbels. Here’s the excerpt, heard during Arum’s interview on ESPN 1100 in Las Vegas:

“What do you mean take the test? For two years Pacquiao has said that he will take any drug test whoever administers it so why is that still being talked about by Mayweather? You see Mayweather is from the school of propaganda that Joseph Goebbels, who was (Adolf) Hitler’s publicist, adopted. The more you say things over and over again the more people believe them. The fact is clear that Pacquiao has agreed to unlimited drug testing so that is not an issue.”

And Arum also has an interesting take on Mayweather’s contention that he deserves more than 50 percent of the pay-per-view proceeds, because he sells more tickets:

“He says I don’t want to do a 50/50 split anymore and we say ‘okay if you think you’re so good then we will do 45/45 and 10 to the winner.’ If he wanted to do it less than 45/45 and the balance to the winner we’d be happy to do that also. Then he says well ‘he’s now entitled to more because I do better pay-per-view numbers than Pacquiao.’ The answer is no you don’t. No you don’t. We will match pay-per-view numbers over the last couple of years. Secondly when you look at the gate, our tickets are sold and Pacquiao brings in gamblers from all over the world. Mayweathers’ tickets sell for a discount on the face value and they clog up the streets. You know that.”

I’ve said before that this fight will likely never happen, and that’s probably a good thing — the idea of a Mayweather-Pacquiao fight is probably more intriguing than the genuine article. Both are on the downward sides of their prime, or will be by the time any meeting could be set up.

Only one person could broker a deal between the two, in my opinion. Your move, Bieber.

    Godwin’s Law.

    Mayweather wins.

I hate it when he wins.

…on a serious note, all deliberations should be, from this point on, handled in a public setting, with the press present. Both fighters, managers, and any fight promoters as are necessary all sitting around a table. Turn the microphones on, and let’s hear what the actual hold up is.

My money is on Mayweather being the one who doesn’t want this fight.

Agreed. Mayweather can hide behind the money excuse on for so long. If the HBO 24/7s show anything its that May values only one thing over money and thats being undefeated.

He knows Paman is the first real threat he will face in about 5 years.

He’d go insane if he lost. Why? Because Bon Arum would never give him a rematch.

The ongoing bickering IS the fight. It will never happen inside the ropes.

Floyd has never fought anyone who wasn’t on the downside of their career.

Mayweather likes fighting has beens. If he waits long enough Pacman will be a has been, but so will Mayweather.

This has got to be the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard in my life.

The real fight is Arum vs Mayweather. Mayweather is being a girl about it, but Pacquaio should step up, take the higher road and just accept the Mayweather propsed drug test. If it wasn’t for Arum being such a sleazy scum bag, this fight would be on. Arum and Pacquaio deserve as much blame as Floyd gets for this fight happens.

    • 4thquartermagic - May 10, 2012 at 3:35 PM

Ummm,,, Pacquaio HAS accepted the drug test. Mayweather has flip-flopped on that issue and is now saying the issue is the 50/50 split.

Who here can back me up on this?

His name is MONEY Mayweather for crying out loud, it’s about THE MONEY!

      • t16rich - May 10, 2012 at 6:33 PM

Yeah you’re 100% correct, didn’t have my words or facts straight. I was thinking they were still arguing on who would conduct the test. I still think this is as much Arum as it is Floyd. Manny used to say how he fought for the people, money never came out of his mouth. Floyd is offering him $40 million, more than he’s ever made. I get Floyd is a greedy man, but it does seem Arum has gotten in Pac Man’s ear. Manny used to say he fights for the people, so suddenly $40 million isn’t enough to fight for the people? We already know that Floyd and Arum are greedy. If Manny really wants this fight, he could tell Arum to make it happen. It would be his biggest pay day ever. I know he deserves 50/50, but we already know that Floyd is greedy, and $40 million isn’t a chump purse. Manny should do it for the people and accept the offered purse, go beat Floyd, steal the winners purse and all Floyds endorsments. You are right though, Floyds a chump, driving force behind this not happening, but Arum is nearly or just as guilty.

        • 4thquartermagic - May 10, 2012 at 6:48 PM

I agree that Arum may be just as guilty as Mayweather in this stalemate. But unlike Mayweather, Arum offers a solution. Winner gets the lions-share of the money. Sounds reasonable to me. Mayweather’s response: “Pacquaio needs to fire Arum and just take the 40 mil.” Why fire Arum if he’s doing exactly what he’s suppose to do? (Negotiating fair terms). More importantly, if Mayweather is so confident in a victory why not literally “put your money where your mouth is” and accept “winner take all” terms?

          Mayweather doesn’t want this fight.

      • t16rich - May 10, 2012 at 7:06 PM

Yeah I have heard that same comment from De La Hoya. Pac Man gets rid of Arum, he gets paid. Mayweather is cocky for a reason, because he’s good. But people that cocky are always afraid of somthing, thats why they like being seen as super stars. He is definatly afraid to lose this fight. Floyd wouldnt be able to handle the haters comments if he loses. Like all humans, especially arrogant ones, Floyd has some insecurity issues. A loss on his awesome record would shatter his life. And again you are right, Arum is just doing his job. I just wish it was a perfect world, and we could let Floyd continue to be greedy, where in turn, we get to watch Manny beat him.
