Jake Plummer on Tim Tebow: ‘You don’t win Super Bowls with a humanitarian at quarterback’

Former Broncos quarterback Jake Plummer earned a few headlines last year when he advised Tim Tebow to not stomp so heavily on the religion pedal in his dealings with teammates and the press. Now Plummer, who was traded by the Broncos in 2007 (and is now unofficially retired), is talking Tebow again. Plummer was seen throwing passes to Broncos prospects at the team’s training facility on Sunday, so of course that fueled speculation that the 37-year-old was planning a comeback.

In an interview with KKFN radio in Denver on Tuesday, Plummer flatly debunked the comeback talk. But he did have a few additional things to say about Tebow.

“I don’t know if you can say what bugs me about him. I think I just, throughout my whole life I understand people’s beliefs and what they believe in and it always kind of rubbed me the wrong way, after a game the people I always thanked were my teammates because they were there. Whatever belief you believe in that’s fine but … I just thought it would be nice for him to take credit for himself and to his teammates for once.

I respect the kid after the way the season went down and paying attention to what he does for other people in their lives. … The kid has a big heart, he’s a humanitarian, but to back up what (John) Elway did, you don’t win Super Bowls with a humanitarian at a quarterback. You win Super Bowls with a genius quarterback who knows what is going on and that is Peyton Manning.”

Plummer went on to say that the trend of drafting athletic quarterbacks such as “Cam Newton, Tebow, and (Michael) Vick” is not going to result in a Super Bowl win anytime soon.

“Until those offensive coordinators get creative enough I don’t think you will see a team win a Super Bowl with one of those guys.”

Anyway, the handball community will be happy to learn that Plummer isn’t going back to football.

You also don’t win Superbowls with mediocre quarterbacks like Jake Plummer either.

    • skids003 - Mar 28, 2012 at 4:10 PM

      Or an idiot like him.

  2. IPA Discovery - Mar 28, 2012 at 3:18 PM

Sure, Jake… And people in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones.

    • paperlions - Mar 29, 2012 at 8:44 AM

Yeah, um….that isn’t what that adage means.

    Plummer keeps it real.

And even tho I was one of the Bronco fans yelling for his benching in 07, even I recognized that Plummer played for the love of the game. Shanny took that away from him and that’s why he retired.

He wasn’t in it for the money (he walked away from millions), cared about winning, and was loved by his teammates.

Keep doin your thang Jake. People love Tebow cuz he is “real” and “genuine” and guess what, so is Plummer. Maybe too real for most.

I admire plummers candor but I would caution him. Criticizing Tebow(or anyone) for their religious practices is a bad idea.

I totally agree that it is a bad idea, but the guy really doesn’t have much to lose. He is a mid-30′s handball enthusiast with enough money to live luxoriously on for the rest of his life who hasn’t been in the media since Tim Tebow starting playing games.

I never knew that Trent Dilfer was a genius…and, not to hate, but Brett Farve’s indescretions don’t exactly qualify him as anybody’s valedictorian either. The list could go on…

“Brett Farve’s indescretions don’t exactly qualify him as anybody’s valedictorian”

yeah and he won a super bowl. i think that’s Plummer’s point.

i may be misunderstanding your post though…

AAAAAHHH! Jake Plummer!? What is this guys obsession with Tim Tebow?!?

Is it because Tebow came in and made Bronco fans cheer like they haven’t cheered in over a decade? Is it because Bronco fans wanted Plummer gone, and loved Tim Tebow? Is it because you were cast off like a wet booger?

and obviously you can’t win a Super Bowl with the type of QB you were so they may as well try something else right?

(if Trent Dilfer can win a SB ring as a starter then anyone can)

What is your deal Jake Plummer?!?

Please ride off into mediocrity knowing your last job in the NFL was as a holder on extra points and field goals.

How many humanitarian quarterbacks have there been? First for everything, Jake.

  8. wayne1693 - Apr 2, 2012 at 5:20 PM

Maybe Jake wants G.M.s to look for latent Dictators and potential African War-Lords among QBs in the Draft. My friends at the State Department tell me that Koni has an amazingly high QBR and Wonderlik score…
