Jim Boeheim: ‘Charles Barkley is an idiot’

It’s been a tumultuous year for Jim Boeheim, but I don’t have to tell you that. If an aggressive alien race attacked us like in Ender’s Game or Independence Day, this is the man who would array the defending armies of Earth into a tight, 2-3 zone. Also, our planet would have about three thousand turnovers. And yet, his Syracuse Orange have made it to the Sweet 16, and may see the light of the Final Four, if the NCAA Tourney bracket is the slightest bit kind.

Of course, Charles Barkley doesn’t think Syracuse should have made it this far. Barkley, an analyst for TNT, had some harsh words for officials who appeared to have missed a couple of calls in the Orange’s opening-round win over North Carolina-Asheville. Barkley also said that there are some calls officials shouldn’t make in the late going of a close NCAA tournament game. Here’s Boeheim’s reaction to that on 1260 The Score radio in Syracuse:

“Charles is an idiot. … You have to call calls. If they’re there, you have to call them. If a foul occurs or whatever happens, you have to call it. It’s as simple as that. If referees start doing that, we’ll have a chaotic situation. They have to make the calls that are there. If it’s a little touch foul away from the ball, a good referee won’t call that.”

Poor, embattled Jim Boeheim. Here’s a telling metaphor if there ever was one:

    Boeheim is a loser.

Barkley does need to shut up occasionally.

The sad part is… he gets paid not to.

Both of them may be right. Unless Barkley feels that NO calls should be made, he IS NUTS. However, what Boeheim said is probably close to what Charles is thinking. A small light touch in the late going is not or should not be called. I think that is what Barkley is saying. I didn’t see the game, and don’t know which fouls were or were not called. However, ANY foul which is very obvious and has some affect on the play, MUST be called, or there will be chaos on the court. Does Charles feel the intentional fouls should not be called? If he does, I am with Boeheim.

If Boeheim had big grapefruits, he would agree that the officiating in the final 4 minutes was horrendous. I had Syracuse taking that game in my bracktet, but Asheville beat them in that game and got jobbed.
