Catholic Church wants Manny Pacquiao to be ‘the Tim Tebow of the Philippines’

After telling a Philippine TV station that he had “an encounter with God” during a dream, Manny Pacquiao is now being sought by the Catholic Church to be the country’s bible ambassador. But not only that: one bishop wants Pacquiao to go Full Tebow.

“Tim Tebow became very popular by promoting the word of God,” Bishop Pablo Virgilio David, who presides over the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines’ (CBCP) bible ministry, told Agence France-Presse. “Some have referred to Manny Pacquiao as the Tim Tebow of the Philippines.”

It was in mid-January that Pacquiao told the TV station ABS-CBN about his renewed faith, in which he decided to give up womanizing and gambling due to a dream he had about God.

Pacquiao said a dream he had after his fight with Juan Manuel Marquez last November started him on the road to change. In his dream, he said he was walking inside a beautiful forest when a bright light shone on him and a voice asked: “Son, why are you going away from me?”

“I woke up crying. I remember I was crying in my dream and when I touched my pillow, it was wet,” he said.”

Tebow was born in the Philippines, where his father, Bob Tebow, had started the Bob Tebow Evangelistic Association. So far, Pacquiao has not agreed to be the country’s new Tebow. If he does, then I want Tebow to fight Floyd Mayweather. Only fair.

We tend to suffer from a severe case of myopia here in the U.S., especially when it comes to sports. There is, however, a big wide world out there whose residents also…
