Who will light the Olympic flame? They’re already taking bets

Fun fact: The Olympic Torch Relay was introduced not by the ancient Greeks, but by Joseph Goebbels. It was first done during the 1936 Games in Berlin, and continues to this day, where bookies now lay odds on who will be the final runner to light the cauldron. So, who will it be in London this year?

Five-time rowing gold medalist Steve Redgrave is the big favorite with the bookies, with British Olympians Kelly Holmes, Daley Thompson and Tom Daley also in the mix. Football icon David Beckham, 4-minute miler Roger Bannister, middle-distance great Sebastian Coe and even Queen Elizabeth II are among other names being mentioned.

Best possible choice? It is of course Queen Elizabeth — but only if she shoots a flaming arrow to light the cauldron, just like Spain’s Antonio Rebello in 1992.

That would be awesome, as Kevin from The Office would say. But if the Queen turns this down, here are other choices Britain could make for the final torch runner:

Ricky Gervais.

Robot from Dr. Who.

Pippa Middleton.

Benny Hill impersonator (with Yaketty Sax music).

Pippa, please. In a kilt. Or a British style maid outfit, with the stockings… Please?

“Robot from Dr. Who”? Really? Are you referring to the Daleks or the Cybermen? Get with it Chandler! I’d go on, but I can’t stop laughing, thinking about the Benny Hill impersonator.
