Westboro Baptist Church plans to protest at Joe Paterno’s funeral
Jan 24, 2012, 3:43 PM EDT
Hoo boy, get your popcorn ready. What happens when a cold front of grief and anger meets a high pressure system of homophobia and crazy? It will start raining mayhem right there in State College, PA.
A private service for former Penn State football coach Joe Paterno, who died on Sunday due to lung cancer, will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday. The family funeral procession will begin at 3 p.m., and the burial will be private. But a public memorial service will be held on Thursday at the Bryce Jordan Center in State College, for which a free ticket allotment is already gone. Presumably, that’s the venue that the Westboro Baptist Church plans to protest. Insane sign-lettering powers, activate!
“Joe Paterno is dead. WBC will picket his funeral,” Margie Phelps, daughter of Westboro’s founder, Pastor Fred Phelps said on Twitter. “He’s in hell. Don’t partake of your neighbor’s sin!”
Exactly which event Westboro plans to picket is not clear — they probably don’t even know. All a visit to Phelps’ twitter page gets you is a cavalcade of retweets on the message above — these folks don’t worship God as much as they worship publicity.

They’re not people. They protested our memorial service here in Joplin after the tornado, too. They are monsters.

I agree with you and Rick’s last statement. I think it’s the publicity they worship. To do this at a funeral is as low as you can get. Especially at a funeral for a soldier who has given his life so we can enjoy the rights we and they have.

I think it’s less the publicity, and more the possibility of having someone attack them and a nice juicy lawsuit.

Even I have nothing to do with it, I feel the need to aplogize to the Paterno family for what these scumbags are doing.
RIP JoPa.

Please someone put up a live feed of this. You don’t think some wack job Paterno fan is going to go after one of these wack job protestors?
What kind of people go around protesting funerals? Whatever JoePa had to do with the cover up will come to light in the court of law, he can’t defend himself, so whatever comes out will be part of his legacy. These wack jobs need to stand outside of Sanduskys house night and day and protest him for just still being alive.

I doubt a Penn State fan will be crazy enough to do anything since Marines and others in the military haven’t done anything after they protested at military funerals.
Yet.

Our soldiers are much more disciplined than the PSU crowd. I would not be surprised if something went down.

If I have learned anything from the Westboro Baptist Church, it’s that signs aimed at shocking people just don’t work.

Is there nothing these POS won’t do for attention for their all family/incest related “chuch”? And I use the word “church” lightly.
Anything to try and keep them relevant, huh?

hopefully the alumni are more incensed over this than the hiring of Bill O’Brien – and hopefully we see some vintage Lavar Arrington head-hunting of the Phelps clan.

These bastards just make me want to rip there heads off. They protested in Cherry Hill, NJ once against people of the Jewish faith. There was a place of worship and these horrible people were screaming at kids walking by coming home from school. And that was from what I heard a mild protest by there standards. The solider protesting is what really drives me crazy. These kids dedicate there lives to the freedoms we all take for granted only to have these scum bags protest there funerals. When one of these wormburners die we should protest there funeral.
