Well, this is pretty hilarious: when Bury’s Giles Coke was brought down in the 35th minute of their match with Yeovil on Sunday, it resulted in a penalty kick. But coke and Bury captain Steve Schumacher had a mild disagreement over who should take the shot — the kind of mild disagreement you used to have with your brother in the backyard which resulted in the soccer ball being confiscated for another two weeks.

Bury ended up winning 3-1.

Metro UK:

After the match Schumacher said: “I was due to take the penalty the last time Cokey was here. But I said I’d be the bigger man and stepped aside. He apologised afterwards.

“When he came back, I said ‘I’m the penalty-taker.’ I said it again before the game.”

Manchester Evening News:

“All I could think of was getting the ball on the spot and making it 3-1,” Cole said. “I make no apology for wanting to win, however I am also a professional footballer and fully appreciate the need to respect the captain and manager, even when emotions are running high.”

But here’s the real reason Coke likely wanted so badly to take that shot. He wanted redemption for two penalty kicks he took when ppalying for Motherwell against Yeovil almost a year ago to the day. His first kick was ruled out for encroachment, and his second sailed well over the bar, leaving Cole in tears after the game, which ended in a 2-2 draw.
