Did The Onion go overboard with its Joe Paterno headline?

Brilliant satire or too soon? You be the judge. From The Onion, on Sunday:

Joe Paterno Dies In Hospital; Doctors Promise To Tell Their Superiors First Thing Tomorrow

There’s no actual story, which is probably a good thing. It’s just one of those headlines-that-tell-the-story that The Onion does incomparably well. Part of Onion’s genius is that it usually manages to be cutting edge without toppling over the line … but in this case, I don’t know. Your call.

Personally, I preferred this Onion headline:

Arizona Iced Tea Unveils New 4-Foot-Tall Cans

Nope, not over the line. It’s clever and funny, so that makes it ok.

As a humor site, The Onion gets a pass.

The onion rocks! Joe Pa was a good man who clearly made some mistakes. No one is perfect, as much as we wish we were. I still don’t believe everything has come out about the PSU rape scandal. I do wonder if Joe was lead to believe that everything checked out on Sandusky. The former president could have tried to keep it under the rug like he did at Nebraska. Either way that whole situation stinks. I still look at Joe Pa as a good man, and I always will. RIP Joe Pa. Burn in hell Sandusky!
