Despite all evidence to the contrary — including Archie Manning, who laughed when he heard it — Rob Lowe insists that Peyton Manning has decided to retire. Check this series of tweets, and don’t skip the two hilarious ones at the end from ESPN reporter Kara Henderson.

@RobLowe
Hearing my fave, #18 Peyton Manning will not return to #NFL. Wow. #Colts

@RobLowe
@richeisen My people are saying Manning will retire today. What do you hear? #NFL

@RobLowe
#Colts fans, let’s hope my info is wrong. Don’t like being wrong, but this time… I’m hoping #NFL #Manning

@KaraHenderson
Think Chad Lowe has any insight on Eli Manning’s illness?

Watching our newsdesk chase down Rob Lowe rumor is very comical… to me anyhow.

Ha. More frightening than comical, however, is the notion that Rob Lowe has “people.”

USA Today:

Lowe’s ‘report’ appeared to be inaccurate after several interested parties weighed in Wednesday. Manning’s father, Archie, laughed when told of Lowe’s tweet, telling ESPN’s Chris Mortensen “He ain’t retiring. I think he would’ve told me.” Manning’s agent, Tom Condon, says this is the first he’s heard about it, per NFL Network’s Jason La Canfora.

Twitter sure is having fun with this. More reaction tweets:

@sportsguy33 Bill Simmons
Today, Rob Lowe announced Peyton Manning’s retirement and Mark Wahlberg announced he could have stopped 9/11. Your move, Liam Neeson.

@SedanoShow Jorge Sedano
Remember Rob Lowe does work in Pawnee. So, he may truly know about Peyton Manning. #twitterisfun

No matter what happens w Peyton, looking forward to Bleacher Report slideshow on Rob Lowe’s ten biggest scoops

@AndrewBucholtz Andrew Bucholtz
Matt Damon and Ben Affleck got totally scooped here. RT @Patriots Tom Brady will be listed on today’s injury report as DNP

When Wikipedia goes black, Rob Lowe shines light on the world. If this doesn’t change the governments mind, what will?

    Well this puts him right there with Mel Kiper concerning the NFL, but Mel Kiper might be a better actor….

    How is this Lowe’s report. This has been on Fox Sports radio ALL AFTERNOON! Pat O’Brien was the one reporting that Manning will not play another game in the NFL.

    Manning should retire. Seriously. One hit and he could be paralyzed. He can be a great coach and still make million$.

  4. materialman80 - Jan 18, 2012 at 8:20 PM

    Manning would be nuts to continue playing football. He has plenty of money, has nothing to prove and I would think would rather not end up in a wheel chair.

    They obviously had their panties in a bunch over the idea that a hollywood actor had a source and reported it before anyone else.

    Fortunately for them, he turned out to be wrong.

      Actually, if a society is judged by it’s “celebrities,” it would be obvious we are doomed to extinction.
