England’s new 50 pence coin explains soccer offside rule

Well, I’d like to boo the ref on that play, but I don’t have the correct change.

Welcome to the 2012 London Olympics, where the rules of soccer are suddenly crystal clear thanks to the Royal Mint. The Brits this morning rolled out a series of commemorative Olympic coins which depict various events in the 2012 Games, but none more useful than the 50 pence soccer (sorry, football) coin. On one side is noted bicycle kick specialist Queen Elizabeth, and on the other is a diagram explaining the sport’s offside rule.

Except as the video below starring John Cleese shows us, soccer’s offside rule is virtually unknowable.

That’s a lot of information to get on a coin.

As for the other commemorative pocket change, I think my favorite is the archery coin. Although badminton is also good.

Twenty-nine coins in all. Collect ‘em, trade ‘em … they’ve got one for ping pong!
