On Tuesday we brought you the kerfuffle over Bill Maher’s Christmas Eve tweet about Tim Tebow — in which Maher imagined Satan and Hitler Tebowing over the Broncos’ loss the Bills. Here’s the tweet in all its glory. But here’s a couple of Christmas Day tweets from Maher that you may have missed:
@billmaher Bill Maher
Happy birthday to JC – but don’t forget the other “gods” who have the same bday/bio: Horus, Mithra, Krishna, Osiris, Dionysus..makes u think!
@billmaher Bill Maher
Merry Mythmas everybody!
It’s all perfectly unacceptable to many folks, who are calling for a boycott of HBO. Random example:
@ToddShaffer Todd Shaffer
Boycott HBO until they cancel Bill Maher! #HBO #billmaher
@TimTebow Tim Tebow
Tough game today but what’s most important is being able to celebrate the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ. Merry Christmas everyone GB²
Maher of course was ousted from his ABC talk show, Politically Incorrect, for being, um, politically incorrect in comments he made on air about the 9-11 attackers (actually, ABC declined to renew his contract). Is that likely to happen this time?
Maher more likely will get a raise.
This whole controversy is manna from heaven for Maher, who has built his HBO show, Real Time with Bill Maher, on just such controversies. In July Fox News host Sean Hannity declared his version of a fatwa on Maher, saying that he was “sick and tired of the double standard that exists” of letting Maher say anything.
Other recent Maher quotes:
“Only 42 percent of Republicans believe Obama was born in the United States. That’s an amazing statistic. How come in America Christians are the only ones who won’t take anything on faith?“
“A lot of good has come from drugs. I think ‘Penny Lane’ is worth 10 dead kids. Dark Side of the Moon is worth 100 dead kids. Because a lot of kids wouldn’t even be born if it weren’t for that album, so it evens out. There, I said it.” — I’m Swiss HBO special, 2005.
“If conservatives get to call universal healthcare ‘socialized medicine,’ I get to call private, for-profit healthcare ‘soulless, vampire bastards making money off human pain.’”
“I want to always be an interloper. I never want to feel like I’m a guy who is embraced by the people who are putting me on the air. I want to feel like I broke into the studio and took over and made them mad. If I’m not doing that, I’m not doing my job.” — Interview with Larry King, 2010.
Does that sound like someone who is worried about a boycott of HBO? Maher is likely reveling in the attention, and if anything, the controversy will likely get him more viewers. As for me, no way am I missing out on the new season of Life and Times of Tim and the first season of Luck because of something Maher tweeted.
By the way, if you think Bill Maher’s views on religion are interesting, you’ll want to see Ricky Gervais on Twitter.
