Wakeup Call: Joe Paterno’s 85th birthday an occasion for classic Twitter snark

Wednesday was Joe Paterno’s 85th birthday, and a small group of Penn State fans marked the occasion by gathering at Paterno’s statue for a group hug, and then marching to his house to serenade him with Happy Birthday and a Christmas carol. Photos here. In addition, there is a much larger effort afoot — the 109,000 Project — to send Paterno 109,000 birthday cards. The original plan was to send him 10,000 cards, and it grew from there.

U.S. Postal Service, your troubles are over!

But not all of the JoePa birthday shout-outs were well-wishes, I’m afraid. Let’s take a look at the Twitter Machine from Wednesday and this morning:

@ramzyn Ramzy Nasrallah
I’d wish Joe Paterno a happy birthday, but I don’t want to bother him on a Wednesday.

@BobbyBigWheel: Since Joe Paterno waits 8 years to do stuff, I’d like to wish him a happy 77th birthday!

@korkedbats Korked Bats
Today is Joe Paterno’s birthday. But he probably won’t tell anybody.

@WarFratEagle WarFratEagle
Jerry Sandusky booked a moonbounce and a clown for JoePa’s birthday today. Isn’t that nice of him, you guys?

@BeingBielema
Happy birthday JoePa! Thanks for protecting a child rapist the last 15 years! #Cheers!

And so goes the biggest American sports story of 2011 — a tale that remains incredibly divisive, and will for years to come. For many Penn State fans, Paterno remains a hero, and nothing will shake their love and devotion to him. For many others, he’s a villain.

As for me, all I can say is that if I went out to get the mail and there were 109,000 cards there, I’d be annoyed as hell.

    if those people really want something to be mad about, they should direct their anger towards AZ’s own, Sheriff Joe Arpaio..who decided it was more important to go after a few illegal immigrants and political rivals, then have his office investigate over 430 sex crimes against kids!!!! Thats right, not ONE was investigated…
