Chael Sonnen’s not one to hold back. Nor should he be. His popularity, whether positive or negative, has never been higher. And he owes a large part of that to ripping into middleweight champion Anderson Silva every chance he gets. So probably don’t stop doing that. But keep the proper targets in mind. Champions? Fair game. Possible opponents? Definitely. Ring girls? Not as cool.
It’s not exactly the manliest, bravest thing in the world to be calling a pretty girl dumb. In addition to Silva, Sonnen has taken shots at Brazil (Silva’s country), Lance Armstrong, Brazilians, and the Noguiera brothers, but this time he has crossed the line. Well, the Lance Armstrong dig may have crossed the line too, but now he’s picking on women. OK, he did mention Anderson Silva’s wife once, but that was meant to get under Anderson’s skin, and this time he’s only mentioning the lady.
In an interview with Las Vegas Weekly, Sonnen was asked who he was hoping would win “Ring Girl of the Year.”
“We only had one and that was Chandella [Powell],” he replied. “The other was the IQ card girl. Arianny [Celeste] kind of walks around and holds up her latest test score. One time when there was a title fight, she got all the way up to five and we were very proud of her.”
Arianny fired back, tweeting, “Hey what’s ur name.. after @spideranderson kicks your a**..u won’t even be able to count to 5!! Get ready to kiss brazils a**! <3″ and “Talking crap about me In interviews is like when a boy picks on a girl he likes in 1st grade…GROW UP! Doesn’t work anymore sir!”
Agreed. I get that he’s trying to make a joke, but it’s not the coolest thing he’s ever done. Not especially clever. Not especially tough. Calling the best fighter in the world a coward is a gutsy, even if some say stupid, thing to do. That’s part of what sports are all about. Nobody trains and fights and bleeds to get to the top of the mountain so they can call out the ring girl. That’s quite the opposite of gutsy. You’re better than that, Chael. Let’s hope it ends here. This is not the next big rivalry the UFC is looking for.
