AP Great interview with Pete Rose in today’s Big League Stew by David Brown, in which Rose touches on many subjects, including, amusingly, his admiration for Eminem and Michael Jackson. But here’s a portion you might miss, because it’s near the end. And you shouldn’t miss it.
PETE ROSE: Oh, that’s another thing. I’ll guarantee you that you didn’t read the Dowd Report. It was 2,200 pages. He put out that “prosecutor’s brief,” I called it. That’s what everybody got caught up in. How many guys you know in your business going to take time to read 2,200 pages? You won’t even read that about Penn State. And by the way, the guys over at Penn State made Jim Tressel look like an altar boy.
DAVID BROWN: I don’t know about that choice of words, but …
PETE ROSE: Can you be a nicer gentleman, or a better man for your sport or your kids than Joe Paterno?
DAVID BROWN: Well, until this happened…
PETE ROSE: So all the 60 years of putting the $10 million into the library and having the best graduation rate other than Stanford…
DAVID BROWN: OK. Moving along. …
Bonus quote:
DAVID BROWN: We know you like Elvis. What other kinds of music do you listen to?
PETE ROSE: All kinds. Eminem’s the best. Usher. Michael Jackson was a great entertainer. But Eminem — who would have thought that the best rapper in the world would be white and the best golfer in the world would be black, in Tiger Woods?
Ha.
By the way, put Rose in the Hall of Fame already. Do you realize how much good he could do working for charity and heading up MLB youth initiatives? This country was built on second chances, and Rose deserves one. Just make it contingent on his rolling up his sleeves and working it off for the league.

Pete sure has a way of saying the wrong thing. Looks like David Brown was trying to control that. Let Rose in!

Somehow I’m not surprised, because Rose is a well know dumbass.
If he’s on your side, you’re in trouble.

I find it interesting how individuals with a tainted past almost always seem to side with those dealing with a tainted present. Leads you to believe that some never learn from their sins (or maybe better said as “bad decisions”). Pete Rose was a great baseball player, but he violated a sacred rule. He knew the punishment for such crime and still broke the rules. Based on baseball stats alone, no one can debate that Pete belongs in the HOF, but because of what he did, I believe he will not be inducted until after he leaves this world. Baseball deserves to have Pete in the HOF, but Pete does not deserve to live to see the day. Sorry Pete.
As for Paterno, he is innocent until proven guilty, but it is hard for me to fathom that he was not aware of the crimes being committed by Sandusky. His own words of “I should have done more” portrays guilt, making his presumed innocents hard to buy. Hard to believe that 45 incredible years could be wiped off the map by actions of another, but it appears that it is about to happen. Sad for Paterno. but even sadder for the children violated under his reign. Sorry Joe.

As Pete Rose seems to lacking a moral compass, it makes sense that he would defend Paterno in this mess.

Blows my mind that Pete Rose would stick his toes in waters he knows nothing about. It’s shocking that Pete Rose would stick his nose into a case tainted with sex crimes against children. Mr. Rose needs to take his overblown ego and stay at home and mind his own business. He’s tainted goods commenting on tainted goods. He’s an idiot.

Pete Rose lied. He continued to lie for years. He told lies about Dowd. He told lies about Giamatti after Bart had passed and was unable to defend himself. He continually denied gambling on the game until it became clear that nobody believed him and his admissions have consisted of “I’m sick and you should feel sorry for me”. The punishment for gambling on baseball is posted in every clubhouse from the lowest levels of Class A all the way to the major leagues. Rose knew the penalties for his actions. You can put him in the Hall if you wish the day after he dies, but not anytime before.
As to Paterno getting a raw deal, Paterno knew as early as 1998 that Sandusky was an admitted child molestor. Paterno allowed Sandusky to continue to have an office in the athletic building up until a few weeks ago. There’s no good reason why Paterno didn’t call Sandusky into his office in 2002 after he supposedly notified his bosses to ask Sandusky, #1 What the heck is going on? and #2 How soon can you get your butt out of here?

Some people are just morally warped and can’t understand the rules and right from wrong.

I wonder if Sandusky was a Micheal Jackson fan as well.
