Did this man just surf the largest wave ever ridden? (Video)

Surf’s (way) up: Hawaii’s Garrett McNamara may have recently conquered the largest wave ever ridden, if estimates of its size are correct. How big was it?

Try 90 feet. Here’s an amazing photo of the ride, which occurred in Portugal. (The one at right is of McNamara at the Mavericks competition in Half Moon Bay, Calif., this past weekend.

The Hawaiian big wave rider caught the huge monster in Praia do Norte, Nazaré, Portugal, during the ZON North Canyon Project 2011.

“Everything was perfect, the weather, the waves. Cotty and I surfed two big waves of about 60 feet and then, when Garrett was ready came a canyon wave of over 90 feet. The jet ski was the best place to see him riding the biggest wave I’ve ever seen. It was amazing. Most people would be scared, but Garrett was controling everything in the critical part of the wave. It was an inspiring ride by an inspiring surfer,” says Al Mennie.

The previous record was 77 feet, set by Mike Parsons in 2008. Of course these are all estimates, Aquaman was not on hand to officially measure the waves.
