It happened in Kentucky, where Holy Cross High of Louisville was playing Bethlehem High on Senior Night. With just 5:24 elapsed in the first quarter, Holy Cross led, 49-0. Um, what? How?

0:15: Holy Cross returns opening kickoff 94 yards for a touchdown.

1:58: Bethlehem goes three-and-out, and Holy Cross returns the ensuing punt 60 yards for a touchdown.

2:46: Bethlehem loses fumble at its own 10, and Holy Cross scores on first play from scrimmage with 10-yard pass.

4:13: Bethlehem loses another fumble, on its 37, and Holy Cross again needs only one pass to score.

5:08: Holy Cross 43-yard interception return for touchdown.

5:15: Another Holy Cross pick six (ball bounced off receiver’s foot).

At this point it’s 42-0, and Holy Cross is scoring at a better than one-TD-per-minute clip.

5:24: Bethlehem fumbles on its own 8-yard-line, with the ball bouncing directly into the hands of Holy Cross defender who returns it for a TD.

That made it 49-0 with 6:36 remaining in the first quarter. Since Kentucky doesn’t keep such records, it’s unknown if that’s the quickest any team has reached 49 points — although it would pretty much have to be, wouldn’t it? Holy Cross ended up leading at the half, 69-0, and the final was 69-3 (running clock in the second half).

Unsung heroes: Bethlehem players and coaches for surviving the nightmare and persevering, and Holy Cross coaching staff for not running up the score further in the second half.

Statistically speaking: 49 points in 5:24? Holy cow Holy Cross! [Prep Rally]

I second the salute to them for not further running up the score. Because you know there are coaches out there who would have taken the opportunity and went for 100.

My (lowest of the low divisions) university had the ‘fortune’ of playing Ball State one year while I was there. Ball State crushed us 91-27. I hadn’t thought it was possible to run up that many points outside of a video game…

My old school, Johns Hopkins, just beat Gettysburg 83-21. And Gettysburg is not a bad team. These are both D-3 schools. So 91 or 100 is certainly possible when teams from different divisions meet.

So which side was God on?

God had the over, and once he won he ordered HC to call off the dogs.
