Wild evening of HS football violence includes near-fight between marching bands

AP A high school football coach in Georgia was jumped by members of the opposing team and struck in the face with a helmet following a game on Friday, according to WRDW-TV in Augusta. Warren County High coach David Daniel was released from the hospital Sunday night after undergoing major reconstructive surgery to his face.
Yikes.
Carey says he had surgery on his injured eye, but doctors were not able to repair his tear duct. Daniel has crushed bones both above and below his eye and surgeons had to place metal plates in his face to help reconstruct his face. Daniel has also received more than 100 stitches.
Daniel was trying to break up a fight outside of his team’s locker room, according to the report, when the assault occurred. It’s alleged that team members and fans of host Hancock Central High “ambushed” some Warren County players outside of their locker room following the game, which Hancock lost, 21-2. Daniel stepped in and tried to break it up.
News 12 has made numerous calls to the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office, but none have been returned. One investigator News 12 talked to hung up and refused to answer questions about the case.
So as you can see, there’s nothing remotely funny about this story at all. Well, except for this sentence:
The schools’ bands rushed each other to fight, but band directors kept them apart.
I’m imagining the directors did this by raising their batons and blowing their whistles three times — the bands disengaging in crisp, uniform turns to the left.
If I ever get involved in a marching band fight, by the way, I’m taking on the guy with the xylophone.
