Backup headline: ‘I’ve got a triple-word score … in my pants‘. We take you now to the World Scrabble Championships, which are being held in Warsaw, Poland. Britain’s Ed Martin was accused by an opponent of hiding the letter ‘G’ somewhere on his person, and the accuser demanded that Martin be strip-searched. That’s hardcore.

Things got so heated that at one stage the Thai gentleman insisted Martin be strip-searched in the bathroom, in Warsaw, where the tournament was held. Gaming officials refused and the Briton won by just a solitary point.

Nigel Richards (pictured, right), a New Zealander, took the overall title after scoring 95 points with the word ‘omnified’. He was awarded the $20,000 (£12,700) prize.

It was the second time Mr. Richards has claimed the title. He also won in 2007.

The player who accused Martin of cheating is Chollapat Itthi-Aree of Thailand
