Hank Williams Jr. wears Yankees jersey on The View, rips Mickey Mouse
Oct 11, 2011, 3:33 PM EDT
I’m not saying that Hank Williams Jr. is clearly insane: that’s just so difficult to prove in court these days. But let’s take a look at some of the things he said and did on the talk show The View this morning, and I’ll let you make your own call:
Williams repeated his claim that ESPN was “stepping on the toes of free speech.” When co-host Barbara Walters pointed out that wasn’t the case — it was actually the consequences of free speech that got him — Williams clapped his hands and said: “That’s good. I applaud them. That’s their freedom of speech.”
From the Los Angeles Times:
One of the more bizarre moments in “The View” interview came after the panel pointed out a phrase from ESPN’s statement cutting its ties with Williams: “The success of “Monday Night Football’ has always been about the games, and that will continue.”
Williams replied with a quote he said President Harry Truman made in the Rose Garden in 1948. “He was asked a political question and he said, ‘Son, never kick a cow turd on a hot day.’ The bottom line, folks, is, Mickey is a mean mouse. He stepped into this pile — ESPN, and how he is doing this.” He stood and started shaking his arm as he were trying to get rid of something.
He then turned and pointed to Mickey Mantle’s name on his jersey: “This is my Mickey, right here.”
Williams also said: “Disney, ABC, ESPN, me and the opening of ‘Monday Night Football’ are like the Spanish-American war. They’re history.”
And, when asked by co-host Joy Behar why he didn’t use another historical figure besides Hitler to describe Obama’s golf game, Williams said: “I didn’t go to Harvard. I’m not smart enough to know the difference.”
No word yet on how the Yankees feel about Williams ranting while wearing their stuff.
Meanwhile, Greg Cote of the Miami Herald catches Williams in a lie — or at least a deception. He points out that his “new” song about the ESPN controversy, Keep the Change, was actually written by Williams in 2008 in response to Obama’s election. Williams simply altered a few of the lyrics and passed it off as a new creation.

Seriously? Are we still talking about this? Can anyone (ANYONE) tell me why we should care what Captain Has-been Hank Williams Jr. is doing, thinking, writing, singing, etc? This is the single biggest non-story ever, yet it’s sticking around. I watched the interview that he got into trouble for and it was like, “Wow, I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone come across as less educated and more arrogant about being ignorant. Could NOT care less about what he says.” Can we go ahead and put this one to bed now, folks?

What really was so bad about using Hitler’s name in an ANALOGY? Williams was NOT accusing Pres Obama of doing in America what Hitler did in Germany. Nor was he disrespectful towards anyone. He was saying Republicans and Democrats in 2011 America get along about as well as Hitler and Netanyahu would. Pretty simple. Would you have preferred he said JFK and Castro instead? He was making a point, not an accusation.

It was a very poor analogy, but pretty clearly meant to be political, and reflect poorly on President Obama. If anybody expresses a political opinion, then it detracts from the game. Even Jr. can understand that. He should sing a few of his Dad’s sad songs, then go back to rehab.

Why is everyone automatically assuming that Hank Jr was directing the Hitler reference to Obama? Could have been Boehner.
BTW, Hank Jr has been insane for many, many years. Just news to you.

i believe this stunt was orchastrated by williams and fox…espn renewed their contract with the NFL on sept 8th and i get the feeling jr suspected or new that this was his last season after 22 years with the nfl program…fox isnt excactly in bed with abc so they just played along and Whalah….story about nuthin and lots to talk about….what interview with hwjr is so important fox couldnt have it on a tape delay which is probably standard with any live interview….hell even call in radio shows have timed delay….its not like he has oxford credentials for his advanced cognative thought…somehow he may come off as a moron but i get the feeling all the sensationalism over this circus really eludes to the real morons amongst us….
