“We’ll always have Orville Redenbacher.”

I know it’s been a tough month for you — first Nancy Grace on Dancing With the Stars, and now this. According to Us Weekly, Alex Rodriguez and Cameron Diaz have split. Is there no MLB/movie star celebrity union we can believe in anymore?

After a year back together, Cameron Diaz and Alex Rodriguez have ended their romance. “They broke up recently,” a source close to the Yankee slugger, 36, confirms to Us Weekly.

The duo’s low-profile love was marked by beach getaways and intense workouts together. So what got in the way? Their work ethic!

“She’s very busy with her career,” the source says of Bad Teacher actress Diaz, 39. “And he’s had injuries and wants to focus on his game. They’re dedicated professionals.”

I had visions of A-Rod and Cameron growing old together, with Derek Jeter and Minka Kelly as their next door neighbors, the kids of both couples all attending Hogwarts. WHY MUST YOU CRUSH MY DREAMS?

Of course we should have seen this coming after A-Rod told Turtle to stop pestering Teixeira.

Rick: Now this is really sad, but you have managed to spice it up with great humor all the way through! You should (maybe you already are) be writing for several comedies on tv. seriously.

Why bring up the Orville Reddenbacher’s? We are addicted. Not just me(this writer) but the ENTIRE extended family! We recently experienced a crisis. Tropical Storm Lee dropped 15 inches of water over more than a week on us. What wasn’t drenched, drowned, was floating.

Apparently, the large delivery truck delivering Orville’s life time of work to us was caught in the flood. Somehow that length of time in the truck, with humidity at 100% for a week, some how affected the popcorn in the jars with seals and lids. Sounds strange to us but we purchased 4 of these quart sized jars for our big backyard bbq for the first LSU home game.

Neighbors purchased several more jars. None of the jars produced fresh crisp popcorn that we had become addicted to. It was limpy and the taste also was affected. We telephoned OR (now owned by ConAgra) and they knew of this and are replacing our Orville Reddenbacher’s. Meanwhile we bought ANOTHER brand, Brand X!!!! What junk!!! It was worst than soggy Orville! Waiting for our replacement now.

I’m trying to remember if there’s ever been a long term relationship between a high profile athlete and a well known actress. Tony & Eva didn’t make it, nor did David & Hallee or Joe & Marilyn. What do you think this means?

      For starters, here’s three:

      David & Victoria Beckham
      Andre Agassi & Steffi Graf
      Tom Brady & Giselle Bundchen

        No actresses in that group.

In all seriousness, which is hard to do considering the topic, “celebrity” couples are almost all destined to fail. Why? Love it or hate it, to be at the top of your profession you have to have a bit of an ego. The individual will call it “confidence”, but the reality is most people achieve that level of success by being all about ‘self’ and not letting anything get in the way of their singular pursuit.

All of a sudden you’re put into a situation of being subservient to another human being? No way. The “me first” attitude that got you to superstar status is the same attitude that’s the kiss-of-death to personal relationships. Why do you think the divorce rate in Hollywood or professional sports is so high, let alone when you try to combine the two? Talk about the proverbial “recipe for disaster”.

The divorce rate in Hollywood is the same as the divorce rate on Main Street. 50% of all marriages end in divorce.

Is this a fact or did you just make it up?

The divorce rate in America for first marriage is between 45% to 50%. divorcestatistics.org
