Wakeup Call: Sunday’s first three winners at Belmont Park were 9-1-1

AP It was only moments after a special ceremony at Belmont Park on Sunday in honor of the victims of the 9/11 attacks that jockey David Cohen rode the No. 9 horse, Say Toba Sandy, to victory in the first race. That was followed with wins by Wishful Tomcat (No. 1) and Haya’s Boy (also No. 1) in the second and third races … meaning that the first three winners at the Elmont, New York track on the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks were: 9-1-1. Wow. Fate? Coincidence? Design by the horses? You be the judge.
Belmont isn’t only known as the home of New York horse racing, but it also served as one of the staging areas for emergency vehicles after the attacks 10 years ago. So your $2 Pick 3 ticket on Sunday paid $18.60, but it’s probably one that few cashed in.

That keeps us mindful that no matter how advanced we become, how many rocket ships we sent to other planets or to explore other solar systems, that we identify new species of plants and animals, find cures for kinds of cancer, leprosy, ulcers, and many other advances, there are still some things we cannot explain. This should keep us humble.
Our hearts and prayers go forth to the many first responders and their families, and all those loved ones whose family members and friends who lost their lives on 9-1-1, including two of our friends who were working there at the time.
