Wakeup Call: Time to take a look at the Judo World Championships

Getty Images I’ve always pictured judo as elegant flips, with some Bruce Lee karate moves thrown in, but apparently not. Here, Japan’s Tomoko Fukumi (white) grapples Kazakhstan’s Alexandra Podryadova in their qualifier match in the under-48-kilogram division at the judo world championships in Paris.
And how are the American women doing? Uh, oh. USA’s Marti Malloy is in the blue kimono here — I’d say losing to Brazil’s Rafaela Silva in the 57kg semis. Anyway, Japan is dominating the event, to the surprise of no one.
