Oops … it seems Georgia scheduled Boise State because they thought Kellen Moore would be gone

Rude Awakening indeed. For someone with his credentials, it seems that 11th-year Georgia football head coach Mark Richt made a pretty boneheaded scheduling gaffe this season. On Thursday Richt told WCNN Atlanta’s The Rude Awakening that the Bulldogs scheduled Boise State for their 2011 season opener because they thought that Broncos quarterback Kellen Moore had graduated. Ha. From Sports Radio Interviews:
Why did you schedule Boise State in the opener?:
“I think we needed to play somebody that would get our attention, would get the fanbase’s attention and even the college football world’s attention. We certainly fell short of what we were hoping for a year ago. We declined in our record, I think we declined in how people perceived our program and a game like that can jump-start you. And that’s what we’re trying to do.”
On the process of how the Boise State game was set up:
“[The athletic director] came to me with that and he was like, ‘Well, that quarterback’s a senior and he’s leaving.’ I really didn’t look at it. I knew that he had been there a long enough time that he was probably on the way out. After we signed on the dotted line, then I went and looked at the depth chart and realized he was still there. Then I was hoping he would turn pro early and he didn’t do that.”
“Then I was hoping he would get poison oak, or get lost on a very long nature hike. When that didn’t happen, I looked into having someone steal his car keys.”
Coming off the university’s first losing season since 1996, and without a BCS title in Richt’s 10 seasons as head coach, it probably would have been wise to check the Boise State roster before crafting a schedule that will most likely put the Bulldogs at 0-2. They meet South Carolina in Week 2, but then again they might have a chance now that Spurrier has retired.
Wait, what?

Glad I’m not a Georgia fan. Richt really needs to get canned. He probably will be this season.

Kudos to Georgia for having the cohones to schedule Boise State, even if by mistake. Could go a long way toward popping that overinflated hype balloon in the SEC, or not.
