It’s not exactly like landing in Paris, Texas, instead of Paris, France, but it’s bad enough. Serbian tennis player Bojana Jovanovski arrived in what she thought was Carlsbad, Calif., on Sunday for the Mercury Insurance Open, but began to get a sinking feeling while waiting at the airport, by herself, for someone to pick her up.

As she was waiting with her bags for tournament transport to pick her up late Sunday night, a man approached.

“What are you doing here?” the man asked. “Are you playing tennis?”

“Yeah, it’s a tennis tournament,” Jovanovski replied.

“Here?”

After waiting 15 minutes, the 19-year-old Serbian called the tournament again, wondering where her ride was. She was told the driver was looking for her.

“I am the only person here,” she told them. “How can you not see me?”

“Are you in Carlsbad in California or in New Mexico?” the voice at the other end of the phone asked.

Oops. Her travel agent had scheduled the flight from Washington D.C. to Carlsbad, NM. So Jovanowski had to wait eight hours for the next flight to Albuquerque, then got on a connecting flight to San Diego and drove to Carlsbadm arriving 30 minutes before her match with Roberta Vinci. Which she lost, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1.

Her next tournament? Birmingham (country unclear: not legible on itinerary).

Wait – it gets worse. She was so exhausted from the ordeal, that when she heard the garbled announcement that her flight for her next tournament in Oakland, California was boarding, she didn’t realize her mistakeand 12 hours later ended up in Auckland, New Zealand.
