Wake Up Call: Spain … come for the weather, stay for the baby jumping
Jun 27, 2011, 9:00 AM EDT
Running with the bulls? Feh. I prefer running with the babies. No one’s sure exactly when or how this tradition got started, but Spanish Catholics celebrate a religious festival each year in the village of Castrillo de Murcia in which men dressed as the devil leap over infants to cleanse them of original sin. This is followed by colorful processions of dancers dressed as demons and angels. They call it El Salto del Colacho, or the Devil’s Jump, and the custom dates back to medieval times.
I’m beginning to think that Catholics are just screwing with us, and this is all the world’s most elaborate practical joke.
