I pretty much guarantee that no previous Miss USA has this bio: Her passions are hockey and space exploration. She also admitted to have been a “history geek”. Yep, meet Alyssa Campanella, representing California and now queen of all she surveys.
And the great thing about this particular beauty queen is not that she’s a former Miss Teen New Jersey runnerup who defected to California, although that helps. Nor is that she’s a redhead. It’s that she scored a 10 on the essay question, which was this:
Should marijuana be legalized?
That’s the type of loaded question that Sarah Palin or Hilary Clinton would totally mishandle, but Campanella fielded it like Brooks Robinson:
“Well, I understand why that question would be asked, especially with today’s economy, but I also understand that medical marijuana is very important to help those who need it medically,” Campanella said. “I’m not sure if it should be legalized, if it would really affect, with the drug war.
“I mean, it’s abused today, unfortunately, so that’s the only reason why I would kind of be a little bit against it, but medically, it’s OK.”
