Caddie turned golfer finishes last in PGA tourney, promises to return to what he does best

It has to be tough being a caddie on the PGA tour– all of them are assuredly avid golfers themselves, but they only ever get to take part in the action from the side. It must be sort of like the oft-heard “always a bridesmaid, never a bride”  complaint, only with a lot more testosterone, half as much crying and much more money on the line.

Kip Henley finally got a chance to compete himself when qualified for the FedEx St. Jude Classic in Memphis by finishing first in the Tennessee PGA Section qualifying, earning the chance to move up from his day job as caddie to tour pro Brian Gay (who was also in the event) to a moonlighting gig as a player himself. Sadly to say, it did not go well.

Henley followed his opening round 82 with a not-quite-as-awful 78, but still missed the cut and finished at the bottom of the pack for the tournament. And since it would be bad form to blame his caddy for the poor performance (working Henley’s bag was his daughter, former American idol contestant Stormi), Henley instead decided to have a little fun with it and posted the note pictured to the right as a mea culpa to the other participants of the event. I believe that’s the same form letter that Carson Palmer sent to Bengals’ ownership this off-season, but alas. Way to have a good laugh out there.

Kudos to Henley for handling his ignominous debut so well, and here’s hoping that he gets another chance to take the field in an event again and make a liar of himself. Someone has to finish last in every tournament after all, so there may as well be a few more self-deprecating notes posted in clubhouses across the country to make those last-place finishes a little more memorable. We believe in you, Kip.

He got in a tournament, that’s better than most.
