Manny Pacquiao wants to ban condoms in the Philippines

May 23, 2011, 10:06 AM EDT

WBO welterweight champion and congressman Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao speaks in Manila

So Manny Pacquiao is afraid of needles and condoms? Pac Man has been a politician for exactly a year now, so he figured it was high time he did something controversial. He now respectfully asks that you throw away your condoms. He says that it’s a sin to use them, and is joining with the Catholic Church in backing the opposition to a bill in the Philippines that would mandate government support for contraceptives. Pacquiao was elected in May, 2010 to the House of Representatives.

“God said, ‘Go out and multiply.’ He did not say, just have two or three kids,” Pacquiao said.

“It’s sinful to use condoms and commit abortion,” he said and when questioned about overpopulation said “my parents were poor… they had four children, it was very difficult but we persevered.”

Or, as it says in the bible: Sex without condoms: what could possibly go wrong?

In my opinion it’s a greater sin not to fight Floyd Mayweather.

Being the best fighter doesn’t make him one bit smarter than he was- dumb as a rock. He doesn’t even seem to know what overpopulation means. Condoms are not mentioned in the bible. The church has always been against anything that would decrease it’s numbers. Brain washing starts at an early age and if you’re stupid to start with so much the easier for the church. Right Manny?

    • anisabrab - May 25, 2011 at 2:01 AM

Those who do not follow the church are those who are atheist, unbelievers and shallow-Catholics. It is not just about the issue of Condoms or contraceptives. There’s more…

The reason why the church oppose this matter is because of the Moral issues. The Church has the right to make this kind of judgment on certain issues that are publicly discussed. The Church would make judgement, release statements, even though it is not popular, they don’t depend on whether their position is popular or practical.

While it is true that condom is no where mentioned in the bible, the general motive of its use to is to interrupt fertilization – where life starts, therefore it is abortion, therefore condoms are abortifacient. And abortion is murder, and God’s 6th commandment is “Thou shall not kill”

That is the problem if you exclude faith in you actions-we are left with our emotions and our own selves, which is VERY prone to errors.

1)The Philippines is one of two predominantly Roman Catholic nations in Asia, the other being East Timor. About 93% of the population is Christian, about 5% are Muslim and about 2% are other or none. –From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. 2)The total population in Philippines grew to 94.6 million in 2010 from 27.1 million in 1960, a 347 percent increase in just 50 years. Philippines has 1.36 percent of the world´s total population which means that one person in every 73 people on the planet is a resident of Philippines. Philippines have the highest population growth rate (2% annually over the past decade) in the Southeast Asia. Due to highest fertility rate (3.3 children that would be born to a woman) and declining death rates the Philippine population will continue to grow in the next 50 years even if each couple limits children to two, according to the Commission on Population. As a result, the population growth has become a big concern since the cost of household living and demand for basic services may put additional strain on country development. SO NOW MY QUESTION! FOR THE LAST HALF CENTURY WHAT DID THE ROMAN CATHOLIC DO TO PREVENT THIS FROM HAPPENING??? THE ANSWER: ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!!!!! AT LEAST THE GOVERNMENT IS TRYING TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT. I’ll tell you the reason why; the Roman Catholic thrives on the poor and helpless. That’s exactly what they want to see happen. Oh no no no! The church have been active on the issue of over population right? They just haven’t been very effective, even though it’s predominantly Roman Catholics. And now all of a sudden the church is against it, yet it’s been widely used in other countries with positive results. ….THIS IS WHAT I HAVE TO SAY TO THE HARD CORE CATHOLIC FILIPINOS ESPECIALLY “ANISARAB” SINCE YOU ARE AGAINST CONTRACEPTIVES, GO TEACH YOURSELF, RELATIVES, AND CATHOLIC FRIENDS TO STOP MULTIPLYING FOR THE SAKE OF YOUR COUNTRY. AND STOP LIVING IN A FANTASY WORLD, WAKE UP AND SMELL THE COFFEE. Bunch of morons I tell you.

      • pilopeelo82 - May 25, 2011 at 7:47 PM

@ anisabrab, Another thing, The church is not the only one that can make judgements; In fact, its judgement is invalid to today’s times. Condoms do not prevent fertilization, it’s people’s choices that prevent it. No one is forced to wear condoms; it is only used as an option to prevent sprouting children like there is no tomorrow. Condoms or not, humanity keeps multiplying, just not at an alarming rate

Maybe you want to recall what happened during time of Moses and Israelites. The last plague was God took the life of all the Egyptian first born, drowned soldiers after the sea divides. Along their journey, Moses even punished a fellow Israelites (as God instructed) by stoning the poor fellow to death just because he picked “manna” on a sabbath day. At the end of the journey here comes the commandment , THOU SHALL NOT KILL! Great.. just great..

I believe in God who equipped us with knowledge and wisdom to know what’s right from wrong. A God who gave us free will on how we can make our own lives sensible and not a God who will do whatever it take to get what he wants… which is exactly what the Church is doing right now..

      • vonkamakari - May 28, 2011 at 9:15 AM

Then we have all been sinners and killers for masturbating and wasting egg cells.

  2. juantotre - May 23, 2011 at 4:37 PM

Manny,God said “go out and multiply”, does not necessarily mean you can have ten kids and hope that one of them will be a successful boxer. There ‘s a bigger chance that half will end up in Jail.
I’m sure God will appreciate it if you only have have kids you can feed, and send to school.

    • justanotherpolitician - May 24, 2011 at 4:59 AM

he doesnt care bcos he cheats on the wife too.

    • vonkamakari - May 28, 2011 at 9:17 AM

I doubt pacquiao has that much depth.

      • vonkamakari - May 28, 2011 at 9:17 AM

Because if he has then he should know that banning condoms is against our democracy.

  3. taipan70 - May 23, 2011 at 6:42 PM

Seriously….Im a Pac fan at heart and even met the chap before he became a true boxing icon. I also have lived there. Pac should have a bit of common sense. In the Philippines a major underlying part of the economical and social issues stem from overpopulation. In area size roughly as slightly larger than Arizona, and with a population of 1/3 of the US. The country would be better off with birth control options for its citizens. The country is roughly the square size of Whoever his political advisors are, they are clearly afraid to confront him on this issue and the merits of contraceptives. They all should be fired.

    • justanotherpolitician - May 24, 2011 at 5:29 PM

You can’t just blame the advisers when things go wrong. If you run for office you have to take full responsibilities of the decisions you make. This is not a game of boxing, this are people’s lives you are dealing with. If you are going to make hasty and unwise decisions just to have something to say, then this is not for you. This is not an 8 hours a day job, it’s a 24/7 and 365 days occupation. Look I know all you Manny’s fans maybe upset with my opinion, but there are millions of Filipinos suffering each day because the Philippine Government System is corrupt to begin with. So If you are serious about helping the Filipino people Mr. Pacquiao look back at your past and remember the time when you had nothing, because those are the kind of people who are in need of your help. They are your true friends. The ones who are kissing your behind now are the ones who will spit you out when your done and through. So Mr. Manny stop playing the game of politics, and start doing what really got you to where you are at now. The heart of a champion have integrity and respect for himself and others. Now you can’t say that with Mayweather, can you?

  4. jpia - May 23, 2011 at 11:47 PM

In behalf of the accountancy students of the Philippines, in behalf of the Junior Philippine Institute of Accountants (JPIA), let I speak with anger!

I lost my respect of manny Paquiao stands!. Should I say just ignore the uneducated ignorant Manny Paquiao?

Anyway he don’t know how to think and to balance the situation because he did not even finished his elementary education when he join the boxing from a very poor rice mill laborer. He only got his High School diploma when he become famous and just to took a placement examination many times from elementary to high school in just 1 year! Awesome!

I am just almost his neighbor in the Philippines. I love manny, I appreciate him for his determination and success in BOXING but he is not ECONOMIST to talk about the economic situation of he Philippines. He is not accountant and even don’t know how to check and balance. Since he supports the DAMASO priest against RH Bill, I lost my respect unto him. He want that the people of the Philippines will remain very poor so people will admire him because he is already rich. HE IS NOT FAIR. Whatever perseverance you make in the Philippines if majority are poor then you would still affected.

The population of the Philippines is too much for this small country and RH Bill must be approve anyway, freedom of choice is still there.

My word for manny. STOP! Look ! and Listen (still remember that song? your teacher in grade 1 taught you that song) Try to analyze the STOP , LOOK and LISTEN Manny.

    • justanotherpolitician - May 24, 2011 at 4:49 AM

      • justanotherpolitician - May 25, 2011 at 12:18 AM

o bakit totoo diba. wag kayo mag malaki porket may natapos kayo. eh tignan nyo nga si manny walang natapos pero ano sya ngayon? daig pa kayo mga may pera or educado na akala mo kung sino pomorma. yan mag isip kayo. kaya kayo nag re-react sa comment ko kasi it hurts kasi totoo. hahahaha. buti nga sa inyo. ang totoong tao na may utak ay yung gumagawa nang mabuti. kasi alam nya ano mangyayari sa kanya in the end. Go Manny You’re the best. Kayo mga pinoy mga inget kay Manny!!!! hahaha!!!

    • anisabrab - May 25, 2011 at 1:44 AM

@Jpia, you’re not in the right position to speak in behalf of the Accountancy Association or whatsoever in the Philippines. Shame on you! It is not because you’re in college, but not even graduated yet, then you have the permission to attack Mr. Manny Pacquiao unfairly and below the belt.

I am commenting on your statements:

“Anyway he don’t know how to think and to balance the situation because he did not even finished his elementary education when he join the boxing from a very poor rice mill laborer. He only got his High School diploma when he become famous and just to took a placement examination many times from elementary to high school in just 1 year! Awesome!”

      - Aside from the grammatical errors, you don’t have any rights in this universe to say that Pacman don’t know how to balance situations. It is not because he did not finish (not did not finished) elementary nor just got his diploma when he became (not when he become) famous, then he’s dumbass. On the contrary, he is more intelligent than you are. Look at how he handles himself? Look at how he managed to become one of the greatest boxers not counting one richest from being very poor as what you said. Can you still consider him unable to think and balance??? Look, I am checking your grammars because you started by degrading Pacman. Now I am telling you, go back to your English 1 and study the subject-verb agreement.

Now, on the issue of the RH Bill, you said that it must be approved, (not bust be approve) while it is true that he’s not in the right position to speak for the Philippine Economy and whatsoever, now my question is, Are you in the right position to speak that RH Bill is the answer? Before you do this, finish your study first and learn how to check and balance. Your statements is tantamount to those who are abruptly commenting and agreeing without pondering.

Now my message for you: STOP non-sense statements, LOOK and delve deeper on the issue and LISTEN to your English 1 teacher.

      • justanotherpolitician - May 25, 2011 at 2:06 AM

I salute you “anisabrab” tell that jpia what it’s all about. hahaha!!!!

      • pilopeelo82 - May 25, 2011 at 6:43 PM

Hey touche, the discussion here is NOT about grammar, it’s about Pacquiao’s poor decision towards his country. Pac may be a great sportsman; however, that doesn’t mean he’s a great politician.

Let me ask you, are you really against condoms or any other contraceptive? Do you believe it’s wise to rear 10 or 20 children? Just imagine the catastrophic effect that would bring to this world, especially to a poorly developed country. Are we also forgetting that condoms highly reduce the chances of catching STDs? Come on now, use your head!

In regards to yourself and Jpia, it’s ironic how a person with lower grammar skills has much more thumbs ups, cheers!

      • vonkamakari - May 28, 2011 at 9:23 AM

Manny only knows how to box. Its the people around him that knows how to manage his career. And I applaud you anisabrab for attacking jpia’s english, that is after all what mature people do, especially in the Philippines. And since you’re in the state of attacking jpia’s english while placing Pacquiao in a pedestal, I’m sure you can do manny a favor too and teach him how to speak properly in an interview next time.

  5. jpia - May 23, 2011 at 11:48 PM

sorry I mean let me speak .. just typo.. I am angry so. I got typo

  6. mbemand - May 24, 2011 at 2:27 AM

To be honest, I think that Manny Pacquiao is a great fighter, he has changed the world of boxing forever. However, to have such a stance on condoms, is not only stupid, but dangerous !

There are two major problems in the Philippines today:

    1. There is no separation between Church and State
    2. Overpopulation

The corruption is a separate issue, and this is also a problem as the basis essential services are not be built to cater for the population, like education, health, roads etc This is because money is being stolen from the people.

If people are so “god fearing” in Philippines and against condom use and proclaim to be christians, why then are the sleeping with people out of wedlock ? Why are they having sex with Married and single women when they themselves are married. This is a blatant contradiction.

When I lived in Manila, I would ask a taxi driver earning 100 dollars a month how many children he has, his answer .. ten ? this is a common occurrence, people have no way of supporting their own family, and so the problems with the church and state (Church controlling the government) and the overpopulation are the biggest concerns today.

God help the Philippines, nearly 100 Million people, 90% live in abstract poverty. I hope that one day they can stop the corruption, overpopulation and the church from making ludicrious decisions when they have no real ability to understand what is best for the people of the Philippines.

  7. justanotherpolitician - May 24, 2011 at 4:15 AM

I love Manny Pacquiao for what he has done in the boxing world. One of the greatest if not the greatest. But after reading this article, I am convinced that he should stay away from politics. First and foremost the country is so corrupt that even the Catholic Church gets involved with govt issue. Now there are those who say that Manny doesn’t have the intellect to run for public office, but then again some of the smartest politicians are even worse and does nothing but steal the country’s wealth. It’s like a virus that never goes away, and just transfer to another person. I thought he was for the people of the Philippines to represent the poor and to make a change for the better. Well, now I know he is there for himself. This is what I will say to Manny: Manny, if you agree to financially support my new born baby or babies from birth until they have completed at least their 4 year college degree and have a good paying job, then you’ll have my vote. If you disagree then you’re just like the rest of the politicians there, corrupt. You are just another politician trying to profit from the people’s sweat. You want to ride the wave so that you’ll have the leverage later on to ride at the top. Manny I beg you, whatever you’re thinking stop! You have a good name right now. Don’t ruin it, for you and for the Filipinos.

  8. justanotherpolitician - May 24, 2011 at 4:58 AM

  9. justanotherpolitician - May 24, 2011 at 6:22 AM

This is for the Roman Catholic Church: Did god ever force us to be Christians? He gave us the fruit of knowledge after Adam took a bite of the apple. So then let the people decide what’s good or bad for them. If they chose to use condoms it’s their choice to be bad. And if the county is majority Christians then you shouldn’t have problems getting your way and preaching in church to avoid using contraceptive. But please it is a democratic country with different religions and different views. Stay away from politics, that’s one of the main reason why I stopped attending mass and stopped calling myself a catholic christian. A bunch of hypocrites I say. Shame on the Roman Catholic for allowing this kind of nonesense.

  10. mik056 - May 24, 2011 at 12:46 PM

this guy has oveousely been hit in the head to much does he not realise that more than a third of the population is starving, not to metion the deseases that are out there, this guy is a retard, hey pack man how much money have you donated to the cause, just thought i would ask .

    • justanotherpolitician - May 24, 2011 at 1:36 PM

I hate to agree with your harsh words against Manny, but I also can’t deny how true you are about the issue of overpopulation, starvation, and diseases out there. So go ahead hit him with a knockout. :)

  11. eddiedrumz - May 24, 2011 at 1:42 PM

I am still a fan of Pacquaio, the fighter –even after reading this but have to say his statements about not using condoms is absurd. Firstly, the Philippines is already over populated. Secondly and more importantly using condoms cuts down the spread of HIV, AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases. The Pope of the RC Church once went to Africa saying that condoms should not be used –while the statistics in Africa of AIDS is one of the highest in the world. Manny ought to rethink his position on condoms.

I think he just crossed over into the dangerous threshold of bad politics that will hurt his popularity. Manny would be able to easily join the Republican Party if the United States wit this platform.

  12. ezwriter69 - May 24, 2011 at 6:10 PM

They’re out of touch because you don’t have to worry about pregnancy if you just follow the fine example of Catholic priests and schtup little boys, aided and abetted by the Bishops and their newly sanctified Saint Pedophilia…

  13. palpakquiao - May 25, 2011 at 7:01 PM

Please understand the man as uneducated and the way he approached the issue in an uneducated way. There is saying that say’s, “you cannot give what you don’t have…” In the same token, you can’t expect some sensible judgment from the guy because he don’t have anything that pertains to politics. The guy can only think with his fists and that’s it. He cannot even discern that he is being used by Catholic institution to pursue their goal and that is to maintain their sect population. Cathollics don’t grow by evangelism they only grow biologically. Anything that threatens population explosion threatens their agenda. Pacquiao please don’t even pretend that you are freaking know everything.

  14. pilopeelo82 - May 26, 2011 at 8:40 PM

We love you Manny! you have done so much for your country! but please, stay out of politics, don’t ruin your name!

  15. andrealuisse - May 27, 2011 at 5:13 AM

I know Manny is great with boxing. let him just stay there. for him to tell people of scriptures from the bible and other people agreeing to what he says is just plain STUPIDITY. do you really need to say God’s name to make a statement so that people will believe what you say?

    think people.

and besides, didn’t manny used a condom once or twice in his life??? if so, well, that is why THERE IS AN RH BILL, so that people who are illiterate be EDUCATED with the use of condoms and other contraceptives.

    GO for RH BILL.
