Wake Up Call: ESPN examines the Iceland soccer celebration craze (video)
May 17, 2011, 9:00 AM EDT
We’ve covered the unhinged goal celebrations of the Icelandic pro soccer team Stjarnan FC quite extensively here, and now ESPN gets on the bus with a video report in which several of the team members are interviewed. Who got to go on the exotic trip to Iceland for this one, I wonder? Nice gig.
The ESPN video is here, and worth checking out. There’s even a celebration in there that I hadn’t seen before: The Rambo.
Turns out that many of the Stjarnan players have known each other since kindergarten, so that combined with the long winters makes fertile ground for dreaming up mischief and wacky antics.
Unfortunately, most videos of these celebrations are unavailable for me to embed, including YouTube versions that have been taken down. Here’s one from NBC, however, which shows another of my favorites, The Birth:

ABOUT LAST NIGHT
What you missed while having a few friends over for a casual barbecue …
- Fox sees man cheating on his golf score, takes appropriate action.
- The Flintstones is returning to prime time TV. My only question is, will David Wright play The Great Gazoo?
- Rare footage of Dennis Rodman partying in Chicago.
- Writer somehow works Osama bin Laden into the lead of his high school girls soccer story.
