I have seen the future and it is picture-in-picture NASCAR commercials (video)

One small step for NASCAR fans, one giant leap for mankind. ESPN is getting set to roll out its new NASCAR Nonstop TV advertising format, in which picture-in-picture technology will be used for the commercials during NASCAR Sprint Cup Series broadcasts this year. Debuting with the Chase for the Sprint Cup race on ESPN this weekend, what you’ll get is demonstrated below:

Because NASCAR fans are noted for their refusal to take their eyes off the race for even one moment, this will be great news … and also result in many nose prints on TV screens. Yes, the picture of the race is small when in this format, but at least it’s there. My question is, does ESPN charge lower ad rates because of the split screen format? They must.

I’d also like to see NASCAR Nonstop technology employed in the following broadcasts:

NFL (just keep playing).
Cricket.
Letterman (let’s see what happens during commercial breaks).
Sportscenter.
Presidential press conferences.
CSI: Miami.

The next step will be to allow viewers to vote on when the commercial runs. For instance, if a fight is boring, boxing fans can opt for a couple of commercials during the dull parts. Think of all the extra revenue the Mets could pull in.
