By Ben Chew: Earlier in the week, the Cuyama Valley Bears defeated the Coast Union Broncos in a regular season Coastal Valley League softball game in California. The real oddity here is the final score.
Cuyama Valley won by the final of 48-47. That’s not a misprint. 48-47! It is believed that the 95 runs scored are the highest total runs ever scored in a high school softball game. The previous mark was set in 1983 in Massachusetts by East Machias Washington Academy when they defeated in-state opponent Lubec 88-6.
The starting pitcher for Cuyama Valley was sophomore Melinda Ramirez, who provided us with one of the more interesting stat lines that I’ve ever seen:
Melinda Ramirez earned the win, giving up 47 runs on 21 hits in the complete-game victory.
Also, there was this: Cuyama Valley’s Ashley Armstrong walked in all of her at-bats. How many walks? Her official stat line was: 0-for-0, 9 BB.
What’s even more impressive is that Cuyama Valley has nine players on its roster, meaning that they played the entire game with no substitutions (in fact, they were one player short). As you’d figure, their head coach was pleased to win:
“The girls were just so excited,” Cuyama Valley coach Mary Jo Harrington said. “They weren’t going to give up in that game. They weren’t playing for much but they wanted to go down winning.”
Somewhere, Charlie Sheen approves.

The previous high scoring game was not played in Massachusetts – East Machias and Lubec are both in the great state of Maine.
