Tampa Bay Lightning fan vs. Homeowners Association: Let’s watch the fun

One of my favorite Frasier episodes was entitled Three Days of the Condo, in which Frasier attempts to depose the dictatorial president of his building’s condo board. In the end, of course, he fails; something that cannot be said of Steven Paul, 28, a Tampa resident and dedicated Tampa Bay Lightning season ticket holder.

In an effort to support his beloved team, Paul put up a “Go Bolts” sign on his lawn, which immediately drew a “no-no note” from his Homeowners Association, which pointed out that no signs other than security signs were allowed on anyone’s property. But Paul had a plan. He added a few words to the sign, so that it now reads “Protected by: Go Bolts security”.

Then in another burst of ingenuity, he noticed that the HOA rules didn’t mention anything about banners. So he hung a large blue Tampa Bay Lightning banner on his garage. The HOA has been by to snap pictures of the offending signage, but so far no further notes have been sent.

Let’s hope that this episode does not end the way that Frasier’s did, with Frasier scurry out of the condo board meeting muttering: “Well, you’ve gotta have rules.”
