High school swim coach pulls girl out of pool by her hair … some have a problem with this

Was that wrong? Should I not have done that? In case you were wondering when we were going to get around to showing a high school swimmer being pulled out of the pool by her hair, here you go. Video right here. It happened in Roseville, CA, gateway to Sacramento (or, if you’re going east, Reno). Assistant swim coach Geoff Capell is apparently a little peeved over two of his swimmers dogging it in a race and getting DQ’d. So he attempts to grab one of them — Jennifer McCarroll — by the hair and pull her from the pool. Yikes. Cool it, Tarzan.

It happened at a league meet on Friday. A videotape of the incident appears to show assistant coach Geoff Capell pulling Jennifer McCarroll out of the water by her hair. Witnesses say his aggressive action wasn’t warranted. They believe he was angry at McCarroll and another swimmer for “intentional disqualification.”

Capell resigned from the volunteer position of assistant coach on Monday and the Roseville Joint Unified School District is apologizing for his actions.

Fun fact: Both Evelyn Ashford and Tedy Bruschi are products of Roseville High.

While the Pacer County DA is mulling whether to file charges on the coach, a trial is already underway in the Fox-TV 40 comments section. Highlights:

I have WANTED to pull someone by the hair waiting in a grocery line because they were taking up too much damn time but it’s ILLEGAL and I don’t want to spend my precious time in jail. … The coach is lucky that I wasn’t one of those parents. He wouldn’t have walked out of that venue with a pretty mug. — WendyNeugebauer at 3:01 PM May 09, 2011

I can see why the coach was mad when his girls did not give 100% effort, especially when I am sure there were numerous girls on the team that would have jumped at the opportunity to swim in that event. With that said, neither side was right. The girls were wrong for not being “true team players” and the coach was 100% wrong for pulling the girls hair. However, in my opinion, the greatest wrong was the person who called the police. — ROCKDOG13 at 1:11 PM May 9, 2011.

Kind regards, from the horrible former swim coach and swimmer who would like to see all student/athletes held acountable for not only the talents that they have, the decisions that they make, and the gift that they have been given………trust me, all can be taken away in a heartbeat. — formerfish at 9:43 PM May 4, 2011

i was there too, and im on the team, and ive been swimming with these coaches for awhile, and i probably know vast more amounts about this than you, and i actually recieved the apology. like rhs swimmer1 said, it takes guts to apologize to your peers, and geoff did not utter one single word of an apology. whether u think it was heartfelt or not, it was an apology. oh, and id like to hear which handful of girls think it wasnt heartfelt. — Other RHS Swimmer at 12:57 AM May 9, 2011

please don’t judge someone untill you know the whole story. I do not think that Geoff deserves the kind of punishment he is recieving now, as in the assault case, but i do think he should have been fired. No matter if he was a good coach or not, it is not alright to do what he did, and for every action we make their are consequences, as all of us on the team are experiencing. I am on the team and I dont think its right that you say the JV swimmers work harder than us, because our practices are 10x harder than the JV girls, which is why we compete at a higher level. Also, again I am not condoning what Jen and Shelbie did, but you should know the only reason why they did it was because they were in a B relay and were not earning points AT ALL for the team. THey would never have done that if it at all jeopardized our teams position in the standings. Also, I’m curious how you know that Geoff has been an amazing coach for 40 years, when you dont swim for him. Please dont judge other people untill you know the whole situation. Oh, and btw Jen and Shelbie apologized for their actions to many of us on the team, and geoff hasnt at all, his actions were just as “disgraceful” and “embarassing”. — Other RHS Swimmer at 7:21 PM May 4, 2011

I promise to give you $10,000 if you can show me evidence that the two girls intenttionally disqualified themselves. — peacrisp at 3:43 PM May 9, 2011.

That’s it, I’m off to Roseville to look for clues.

Yow!That coach needs to be coached himself…in anger management! On a lighter note, with the early summer weather swimming season is almost upon us.
