Getty Images Bowing to intense pressure from the weiner-equity community, officials at the Famous Nathan’s Fourth of July Hot Dog Eating Contest have raised first prize in the women’s division to $10,000, which now equals that of the men’s. It was only last week that Nathan’s announced that for the first time there would be a women’s-only division of the annual Coney Island event. But they set top prize for the women at $2,500, sparking charges of sexism.
“We were contacted by numerous fans of Nathan’s who pointed out that despite the prize disparity in men’s and women’s divisions of other professional sports, the Nathan’s prizes should be the same,” said Nathan’s Famous President Wayne Norbitz. “We listened to that input.”
“We’re giving it our all. We’re putting out our best. Why shouldn’t it be the same?” said fitness instructor Larelle Mele, 46, of Long Pond, Pa., who hopes to win a qualifying event this spring for a shot at the title. “I’m doing something I love and there’s a chance I’ll get paid to do it,” said Mele. “It doesn’t get better than that.”
The moral? Just because you have a weiner, don’t expect to get paid more than women for eating them.
