Christina Aguilera on flubbing Anthem lyrics at Super Bowl: ‘I made myself a Trivial Pursuit question’

Whenever I make a mistake seen and heard by millions around the world, the first person I talk to about it is Ellen DeGeneres. Christina Aguilera is no different, as you’re discovering right about now if you’ve got her show on. And what’s up with that by the way? You’re supposed to be at work, and you’re watching Ellen while reading my blog?

Let’s go back to that magical moment in February when Aguilera fumbled the words to the National Anthem at midfield. From Huffington Post:

While she did forget the lyrics, Aguilera did recognize the screwup, and just how many people had seen it.

“I had been singing that song my entire life. I was the youngest anthem singer in my hometown of Pittsburgh, PA. I sang for the Steelers when I was this big. I think 7 or 8 years old. I would sing for them. I think had a moment where I was at the Super Bowl at 30 years old. I took in the moment a little bit too much. Shoot me for appreciating the moment but here I am at the Super Bowl… singing for a team and in front of the world. And remembering what it was like to be that young and look where I made it now.

“And then it was like, oh. That night I knew, I just made myself a Trivial Pursuit question. ‘In 2011 what female singer, ya know, flubbed the lyrics.’ It’s just insane. But I have a really good laugh about it and you get over things. You get back up again and you just prove to yourself and to everyone you that much stronger.”

A simple “Yeah, I goofed,” would have sufficed. Leaving more time for Ellen’s wacky antics.

Here’s what I have noticed about people singing the Nationa Anthem: The propensity to screw up the words is directly propotionate to their efforts to show off their vocal talents. It’s a one and a half minute song. We don’t need your scatting, or histrionics. We need you to sing the song, straight, and get out without embarrasing yourself. Because we all notice. It’s not a jazz song. It’s the Nationa Anthem.

So…did she get paid for not rehearsing her lines? Seriously, it’s the national anthem, something most 5th graders could swing…but wouldn’t get paid a dime for. Unfortunately, knowing how the industry works, I’m sure she was paid top dollar for failing at one of the most important songs in our nation.

Way to go Christina. You’re an inspiration to noone.

Come on, it was an honest mistake. Besides she’s really cute and has a great personality. I hardly take her for unpatriotic so get over it people.

Ahh yes, the age old argument of ‘She’s cute, so free passes should be awarded.’ What a wonderful society we live in.

“I just made myself a Trivial Pursuit question.”
Please darling, you’re hardly that important.
