Is this an emergence of mankind’s underlying resentment toward technology? Or are Phillies fans just a******s? I like Ben Maller’s description best: For the first time in baseball history, a robot tossed out the first pitch at a Major League Baseball game. It happened in Philadelphia, where the fans booed like it was Santa Claus or an injured Michael Irvin. But to be fair, Phillies fans didn’t heap abuse on Philliebot until after the pitch … a weak changeup that bounced in front of the catcher.

I think trouble was inevitable when the announcer used the phrase: “And now the excitement continues with Philliebot!”

And so Philadelphia sports fans add “booed a robot” to their rich and colorful lore. The Phillie Phanatic calling for a relief pitcher was a nice touch, however.
