Here’s Harrison Township, Michigan resident William Elling, 27, who claims that his Detroit Tigers hat saved his life. Elling said he and some friends were leaving a downtown Mount Clemens bar on April 9 when a gang of men attacked them with bricks. Elling said that one of the bricks hit him in the forehead, but was deflected by the brim of his Tigers’ cap which saved him from serious injury.

“Maybe these guys don’t like the Tigers, but I sure like their baseball hats,” Elling said. “(The brick) skidded across the the top, hit right here and went through to the other side like a knife,” Elling said.

Elling said he was hit in the head and was left with a long gash on his forehead, dizziness and pain.

He said he does not know why the group of men threw the bricks at him and his friends in front of Emerald Theater. However, he said the men were clearly angry and had pulled the bricks up from the sidewalk.

TV-4 Detroit is calling it “a counter-argument for anyone who says being a sports fan isn’t life or death.” Video here.

The Macomb County Sheriff’s Department is investigating what happened.

“The doctor said if I didn’t have the hat on, my brains would be on the sidewalk instead of in my skull still,” Elling said.
