As the Dodgers unveiled their new and improved security force for the opening of their homestand on Thursday (we need Robocop!), the family of Bryan Stow announced that Stow could be waking from his medically-induced coma as soon as today.
Stow’s cousin told AOL News that doctors started weaning him off all sedatives Wednesday night, anticipating that he could awaken soon. The 42-year-old paramedic and father of two young children has not been conscious since he suffered massive head injuries during a beating at the Dodgers’ opener March 31.
“It’s just a matter of time when Bryan will wake up and he’ll start therapy,” John Stow, 39, told AOL News. “We are not giving up. He is going nowhere. There are prayer vigils at all the churches; the whole community is really pulling for Bryan.”
Meanwhile, Dodger Stadium was crawling with police on Thursday for the opener against the Cardinals, as Craig Calcaterra asks the musical question, was it just all PR?
But how long does Los Angeles and the Dodgers keep this up? It’s clearly not sustainable. After all, while the Stow attack “brought a huge amount of attention,” the area around Dodger Stadium does not have the highest crime rate in the city, and eventually resources will have to be more sensibly deployed.
In other words: how long until the heat blows over, the defacto police parades end and the real security enhancements to Dodger Stadium in the post-Stow era can be properly judged?
The LAPD has taken over security at the stadium for the time being, with no word on how long that will last. Meanwhile, Bud Selig has dispatched his own task force to the stadium, headed by MLB vice president of administration John McHale Jr.
Bud Selig and Frank McCourt: Masters of corking the bottle once the genie has already hailed a cab. Oh sorry, was I playing the “blame game” just then? Oh heavens. Mustn’t do that.

That is the big question isn’t it. How long can they mange to keep up this increased security. I heard on the radio that the police cheif didn’t answer where the money was coming from for the extra hands. Hopefully with the recovering of Stow and maybe a change in security strategy, this will all blow over.
