While Giants and Dodgers stage love-in in SF, LA columnist takes potshots at McCourt

Giants fans sharing beer with Dodgers fans, dogs and cats, living together … mass calm.

The Giants and Dodgers renewed their ancient rivalry at AT&T on Monday, and turned swords into plowshares, which were then smothered in nacho sauce. The Giants organization promised no retribution for the March 31 attack in the parking lot of Dodger Stadium that left Giants fan Bryan Stow in a coma, and there were indeed no reports of any violence. The Giants dedicated the game to Stow, and collected about $50,000 to help with his medical expenses. There were pregame speeches about love and tolerance, and former Giant Juan Uribe, now a Dodger, received his World Series ring.

But while all was peace and love in the San Francisco Bay Area, in southern California, Dodgers chairman Frank McCourt was still being slowly roasted over an open pit. Some excerpts from today’s co,lumn by the Los Angeles Times’ TJ Simers:

The Dodgers return home Thursday, the former and present L.A. police chiefs probably arguing about who will get to throw out the ceremonial first fan.

Make it a sea of red and maybe folks will take notice of the cops and Frank McCourt’s overnight realization that Dodger Stadium is about as safe as a park restroom in the middle of the night.

Had McCourt responded to fans’ stadium concerns over the last few years and paid the money to hire a security chief, there probably would have been no need for cops to put such a stranglehold on America’s pastime.

And the coup de grace:

The Giants announced there would be “World Series-like” security here. You can just imagine the puzzled look on the faces of the Dodgers. The World Series — what’s that?

Faceplant.

The Dodgers staged their own event at their stadium on Monday, collecting $61,000 for Stow’s family in a drive-thru fundraising effort. Tommy Lasorda was on hand and contributed $5,000.

The real question is, however, what of the future? Will the two Dodger Stadium assailants ever be caught? Will this feeling of good will between Giants and Dodgers fans continue? Will Dodger Stadium be safe four months from now? Oh, and anyone want to buy two tickets to Giants at Dodgers on Sept. 22? I’m suddenly busy and can’t attend.
