If a soccer ref is hit with a beer cup, this must be Germany

I’m not saying that soccer isn’t as manly as American football, but how do you suspend a pro game because one of the refs is hit with a plastic cup? It happened in Berlin, in the Bundesliga game between St. Pauli and Schalke, which was abandoned in the 88th minute after a fan threw a plastic glass full of beer at a linesman.

I guess he didn’t have a banana.

Schalke was leading 2-0 when Thorsten Schiffner was struck by the beer glass and referee Deniz Aytekin decided to end the game after consulting with his assistant, who fell to the ground but was unhurt.

It was not immediately clear whether the result would stand.

That’s shocking: In soccer, even the refs take dives?

Such beer-hurling behavior cannot be condoned, of course. But to fall to the turf and then cancel the match? Come on, Germany, man up. Here in America, we get pelted with plastic beer cups all the time. We call it “spring break.”
