Who threw the racist banana? In an incident that has all of the soccer world talking, word from London today is that it was a German fan who threw a banana onto the pitch near the feet of Brazil star Neymar, during a friendly between Scotland and Brazil last week.

Damn it, Germany! Do we have to watch you every minute?

Denounced by Brazil as a racist taunt, the banana-throwing was first thought to have come from the “Tartan Army,” a group of devout Scotland soccer supporters. But after an investigation by the London Metropolitan Police, a German teenager has admitted to throwing the yellow fruit onto the field, which landed near Neymar in the second period.

Neymar accused Scotland fans of racist behaviour during Brazil’s 2-0 win. The Scottish Football Association denied the claims that he was racially abused by the Tartan Army.

A club statement read: “The Metropolitan Police are satisfied there was no racist intent and no further action will be taken.”

An SFA statement on Monday said: “The Scottish FA refutes claims from Neymar that he was the victim of racist jeers.”

It said there was no evidence of it but Scotland fans had confirmed booing him “for perceived unsporting behaviour.”

The SFA added: “Scotland supporters are known for impeccable behaviour.”

They may not have thrown the banana, but I find that last sentence very hard to believe. Anyway, now Scotland wants an apology:

The Tartan Army are demanding that Brazil striker Neymar apologises for his allegations of racism after a German tourist admitted throwing a banana on to the pitch during Sunday’s friendly.

But it may be too late. This thing has taken on a life of its own:

Neymar’s quotes following the match:

“This atmosphere of racism is totally sad,” Neymar told a Brazilian TV station. “We leave our country to play here and something like this happens.”

“They were jeering me a lot, even when I was about to kick the penalty the entire stadium was jeering.

“It’s sad. I would rather not even talk about it, to keep the subject from escalating.”

Why is throwing a banana racist? I’ve been wondering that for days.

Don’t criticize my intelligence, that is rude and extremely uncalled for. It was a question. I do not think along racial lines, so the connection was not apparent to me. It has never occurred to me to throw a banana at somebody to insinuate anything.
