You can have Melissa McCafferty’s basketball hoop when you pry it from her cold, dead butt

Admittedly there are more important protests occurring in the world right now, but an injustice is an injustice, and while you may think globally, they say you should act locally. That’s what this housewife did when the Delaware Department of Transportation came by to remove the basketball pole from the front of her house, per an ordinance about objects being too close to the street. Like the heroic tree conservationists of previous decades, Radnor Green resident Melissa McCafferty shinnied up the pole outside her home and refused to come down.

It was a standoff, as four police vehicles — not a lot of crime in Delaware, apparently — responded to the scene to try and talk her down.

In negotiating with the woman, a trooper asked for assistance and three additional state police troopers quickly arrived at the scene along Hilldale Court, [state police spokesman Jefferey] Hale said.

“We were simply there to try to talk her into coming down off the pole,” Hale said.

After it became apparent the woman would not get down, troopers left and did not make an arrest, Hale said.

It was a temporary victory, however. McCafferty failed to embrace her mission with a full commitment, as we see in the video linked here. The cops simply waited a bit and came back after McCafferty had climbed down, and tore out the pole. Tree sitters are supposed to stay in the tree, my dear; not leave when it’s time for American Idol. Rookie mistake.

As always, the comments are more entertaining than the actual story. From Delaware Online:

Couldn’t they just shoot her with a tranquilizer gun much like they do with bears up in trees and just let her fall out…that would have been entertaining. — jafo4743, 10:44 AM on March 25, 2011
