Defensive gems don’t just occur on the field, my friends. Mitch Davie of Brooklyn, N.Y., makes this one-handed grab of a flying bat (after the guy in the striped shirt totally whiffs) without spilling his beer. It happened during the fifth inning of the spring training game between Atlanta and Toronto in Kissimmee, Fla. on Friday, as the Braves’ Dan Uggla lost control of his bat. And kudos also to photographer Dave Goldman, whom I’m imagining got this shot without spilling his beer.
Wizard Cat gives this catch … six wands.

- Vancouver fans put a Canucks jersey on the Wayne Gretzky statue outside Staples Center. Not cool, eh.
- Thirty-five-year-old minor league journeyman Corky Miller, on some Reds teammates who say that signing autographs is a hassle: “If you don’t like it, play worse.”
