Finally, a reason for you to have a rooting interest in women’s tennis. Wimbledon will be shown in movie theaters in 3D this year — for the men’s semis and finals and the women’s finals — in a partnership that was just announced between Sony and the All England Club. I’m skeptical of course, because the last thing I saw in a movie theater that was 3D was Drive Angry. But then Caroline Wozniacki wasn’t in that. From AP:
All England Club chief executive Ian Ritchie says “Wimbledon is renowned for its heritage and sense of tradition. At the same time we are always looking for ways to improve the presentation of the championships by successfully blending that tradition with innovation.”
This is probably just the first step for Sony as far as sports is concerned, seeing that they recently acquired Hawk-Eye, which is the company that developed the computer-based tracking system used in tennis, cricket and snooker officiating. If FIFA decides to use replay technology to assist on goal-line calls, Hawk-Eye will be the system they employ. Yes, robotz iz in ur sportz, makin calz. And it cannot happen in baseball soon enough.
