Breaking news: no one cares about hockey in Miami

Feb 26, 2011, 2:31 PM EST

Miami

Palm trees, warm sandy beaches, a cool breeze, two margaritas in hand and pretty ladies from horizon to horizon. That’s Miami. Or at least what most people think of when they imagine it– an idyllic tropic setting where there’s always plenty going on and cold days are strangers to the land. Now, who’s ready for some ice hockey!??!

In [Miami], infomercials get higher TV ratings than the NHL franchise, according to the Miami Herald. The AbCoaster exercise equipment infomercial along with an infomercial for a Hi-Powered Blender got more people to watch. The Panthers drew an NHL worst .19 local TV rating.

I’m pretty sure you could televise paint drying on turtle’s back and it’d draw more than a .19

I’m sure the NHL is going to stick to their guns that despite the mountains of evidence declaring otherwise, professional hockey in the American South is a successful endeavor. But to have more people watching an infomercial for a blender (though to be fair, half of those were probably just drunks passed out with the TV on) than a local professional sports event is just absurd. There are no two ways about it. I don’t know what else there is to say that could be any funnier than the truth.

.19!

In related news, the Panthers have announced the trade of their captain, two defensemen, and a goalie for two blenders and an abcoaster. The team promises to be more exciting, if not any better.

Other than the Dolphins, there’s no real support for big time sports down here…of any nature…
